Subject: COMMUTER CHALLENGE

Last year there was a "Summer Bike to Work Challenge" from May 1 to September 1. How about expanding it to any bike commute? IMHO every bike trip that's not a car trip should count.

I believe that the bike to work goal last year was 50. How about we all name our goals and go from there?

I set the ambitious goal of 100 for all of 2008. Now that the snow is almost gone, I better get going! Getting the commuter bike all tuned up should be a good start.

Who's in?

wgraves7582 - 2008-04-08 1:02 PM So let me get this right - 100 trips anywhere that you would usually take your car? I am in for 50. Between bike trips to meetings and work I should hit 50 pretty easily, but my travel schedule may go wacky and I cannot commit to 100. Don't want to fail another challenge because of work schedule!

Understandably, everyone isn't the same, so the idea is to set your own goal depending on what you think you can do realistically but will be a challenge.

I'm up for this. I should be able to hit 50. 100 commutes is impressive.

Can I count a commute where I run instead of bike? I'm only 4.5 miles from work and I'm hoping to run commute once or twice a week to pick up a little extra run time.

I be in for this, with some stipulations and also once my new jobs regulates itself.

Is it ok to bike from home to train station, then from destination train station to work, and back the same way?

If so, I'm in. Numbers later.

Sure! Hey, I lived in DC for awhile and did the same thing. The bike lockers at metro stations were awesome!

No problem. This is a personal challenge really. So go for it!!

Gee, I'm about the same distance to work too, but never thought of a run commute. Sure, it should count. It's one less car on the road.

I better get cracking!! I'll make a list of goals and people in the challenge later.

I'm in and am going to set my goal conservatively at 50. I've been swimming masters this year and love it. My plan is to ride to masters, then to work but I need to see how it goes a few times first. If it's ok (I'll probably have to leave at 5:45), I'll up the goal.

My commute is about 35 miles round trip and this will be my 3'rd year commuting (albeit a little late this year) and I save about $5-$6 per day I ride. Ironically, I started one month before gas prices went sky high.

I had planned on starting (again) this Wed.

May 1st to September 1st - I'll bike commute twice per week.  Knowing that I have 1 weeks vacation already planned during that period put me down for 22 times.

Ooh this'll be a challenge - I used to commute by bike every day but dropped off when I changed job. I'll set myself a target of 30 - which'll be pretty hard as I have to use the car for company visits but it'll be good to have a challenge to aim for.

Wow - my 22 seems so low a number.  Are we counting each way - i.e. To Work = 1, From Work = 1.  Or To and From Work = 1.  I figured it was the latter (i.e. I'll bike commute 22 days this year).

I'd love to be in on this too. I don't commute to work, I do construction and it is alittle diffacult to carry stuff on my bike. But I have been riding to the gym and store and things like that to conserve on gas and pollution. So I think that I would be in for 100 trips.

I'm definitely in... put me down for 100 for all of 2008 (1 down already, 99 to go!) :-) Now I have even MORE justification to go get that new bike (test riding tomorrow-YAY!) :-)

I'm in for 50 this summer when I don't have to drop kids off @ school.  I'd planned on doing this as a part of my training for Nov IM. I built up this commuter bike from an old steel roadie as a winter project so I could haul all my run, swim and work stuff.

I don't think it really matters, as long as you tally them up as you've planned. I think you number "seems" low because it's over 4 months, whereas I'm planning commuting from now until Daylight Saving Time ends (6 1/2 months).

Count me in. My internship this summer is close to home so I could do that and/or ride my bike to my friend's for yoga. I'll have to look at it and come back with numbers later.

Isn't this challenge from May 1st to Sept. 1st?   Maybe I read it wrong - please confirm if there is a start and end date to this challenge or if it's all of 2008.
