Can anybody give a scouting report on this race?

I'm a flatlander (Dallas, TX) and will be heading North to see what it's like to suffer from the hills. Please tell me it's nothing like climbing Mt Nebo (when camping I saw some cyclists climbin it). I'll be entering the aquabike as I'm trying to be cautious from some back issues over the past year.

I'm probably going to stay at the campground with a pop-up camper. But, if not, any recommendations for places to stay?

Here's the website for the race if you have not already looked through it.  It does have course descriptions which match that of the people I have talked to about it. I have not done the course personally but plan to either do the oly or maybe the half but will pass along any other information as I can get it.  Plan on it being hot and humid and hills (while not Nebo) real.

For convenience, get a room at the DeGray Lake Lodge - oldish interiors but close. http://www.degray.com/lodge/

I did the half 4 years ago (baby hiatus since) -

Lake DeGray is great - clean and clear, some foliage

Bike is tough. Starts out up the dam, short level period then down the mountain. It's an out and back, so problem is about mile 50 you climb back up the mountain. A lot of people (including me) cramp up about that time - so hydration and electrolyte balance are crucial.

The run is a relatively flat loop. Long section are not shaded - so I ran into an issue of getting there late morning and run/walking in full sun.

I promised myself I would do it again, but only if I could do it fast enough to not get stuck in 100degree August temperatures.

Any idea how long a drive it is from Little Rock to Arkadelphia?

It's about an hour from Downtown LR. The race site is only a few miles off of I30 - take the Hwy7 exit and it's right down at that dam.  I think there are other hotels in the Arkadelphia area, I just found the Lodge to be nice because it was so close.

Coming from NWA you could also look at staying in Hot Springs (30 min), Malvern (20 min), or Benton (40 min).

There is also a campsite at DeGray that a lot of racers choose to stay at.

Uh - btw - there is a State Park bare-bones restroom at the race site, but it's a big race.  Take you on TP :-).

What about camping? I'm more interested in one with nicer facilities more than being closest to the race site as we will be camping a few days beyond the race. I'm leaning towards Degray State Park as we've really been impressed with the AR state parks, but I'd be interested in hearing about the Iron Mountain campground as well.

The DeGray State Park sites are the best in the area. The Corp of Engineers campgrounds can be iffy. Another option is the Rent-A-Yurt. Each one sleeps six on bunk beds has electric, water and a grill. Lots of options at the park but it fills up quickly so make your reservation.

I did this 1/2 ironman race last year. It was well organized and had the right amount of aid stations, etc. It was my first 1/2 ironman, so I was really nervious. I plan to do it again this year.

The bike portion is hilly, but nothing undoable. I am not an expert cyclist at all, and I made it. There is at least one downhill that you really need to be careful on, but they warn you about where it is before hand. I saw some pushing their bikes up a couple of hills. I am rather small so I was able to crank it out without getting off. My toughest portion was the swim, but I am a slow swimmer, and I have a lot of anxiety in the lake. As far as lakes go, it is nice. I did not have to swim through grass or anything.

A friend of mine did the sprint distance tri the following day. She and her husband camped out in a pop-up camper and had a great time. We stayed at a hotel that was around ten minutes away (if I remember correctly) from the race. The hotel was not so great, but I was so nervious about the race that it did not bother me too much.

Hope this info is useful. Have a great day,
Melisha

My family camps there every year.  Last year my bro, whos a cat III rider decided we should ride around the lake.  All the way around the Lake!!!  76 miles I think.  Im from NE ark where there are zero hills.   At mile 10, trying to keep his pace, I said forget this and went back to camp for a hot dog.   Crazy Hilly!!!  But that was on the opposite side of the lake too.  At mile 20, I got a call to come get my bro inlaw who was on the side of the road vomiting.  He and I were at similar ability levels.  He just had more pride.......
I never made it to the Iron Mountain area, but plan on doing the sprint there this year for my first tri ever.  We will be camping prior to the race.
