Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 AM and drove across wisconsin to the race, arrived about 6:40. unloaded my stuff, registered and got everything ready.
Event warmup:

Had to move my car, so i ran back from that (3-4 mins probably), then swam a 100-200 yards before the race. The race was delayed about 30 mins, it was supposed to start at 7:30, but didn't until i around 7:50-8 am.
Swim

  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went pretty well, i didn't get sucked in too bad in the washing machine, I tried to draft quite a bit, but didn't work out very well. was able to draft on and off on the way out, and all on my own on the way back. I still really need to work on that!
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, just working on drafting!
Transition 1

Comments:

The zipper got stuck and i wasn't able to get it down until the 3rd try, which by that point, i was at my bike. i don't know why it got stuck, but it was annoying. after i got the suit off i was speedy and outta there!
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my zipper does stick :)
Bike

Comments:

I feel like i would be able to race better if i were better at the technical aspects of biking - i.e. cornering with lots of speed, turning quickly etc. this just comes with practice and is another excuse for me to start bike racing! Overall, pretty good. it was a little weird because they started the sprint right after we left for the swim, so during the bike i passed a bunch of people doing the sprint. I hung with some good cyclists, they would pass me, then i would stay 20 feet back from them for quite a while, then i either passed them and never saw them again, or they pulled ahead :)
What would you do differently?:

I still am trying to figure out the nutrition part of this. i drank my aerobottle of water, 1/2 a bottle of HEED, and at one GU (about 5-7 miles) on the bike. I felt like i was taking in a little too much calories (with the heed), so i didn't take another gu around 20 miles, like i had previously planned. so, this is just a constant learning point. i also feel like i should be able to ride faster. i bike quite a bit and i don't like getting passed by people!
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Went pretty well, i forgot to tighten my yankz until i was on the course :) the lady next to me who just racked her bike took up all the space, so i had to wait a sec for her to move her bike over. body glide'd my feet, put on my shoes and rolled out!
What would you do differently?:

make sure to rack next to smarter people :) - no, just remember to tighten my shoes before i leave T2
Run
  • 41m 57s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went pretty well, i just tryed to go out steady and get in the groove, which i did pretty well. i ran the whole thing with a guy i had been back and forth on the bike with, and i talked to him some, so that was cool. definitly need to get in better running shape, it still takes a lot out of me. with the detour, im not sure if the time should be about what it is or more or less. . so i am kind of skeptical on the exactness of my time, but i figure it can only be +- 30 seconds or so. shins felt/feel great though!
What would you do differently?:

make sure to check out the routes before the race. run more often
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, grabbed 2 bottles of water and walked around the transition area. found some shade, stretched, then walked some more and hit up the food tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i didnt actually feel that good this morning, my HR seemed higher then normal, when i wasn't doing anything, and i have felt run down the last few days, i think just because of a change in schedule. but apparently, i performed well (for me :) ). i feel like i have a lot of room for improvement, and i am looking forward to see what i can do when i get the proper amount of training for all 3 sports in!

Event comments:

Fun little, not the most organized, but good enough. lots of water stops on the run, which was great, and pulled pork bbq sandwiches after the race! that was pretty nice.
