After much shopping, research, and positng on the forums I fianlly bit the bullet last week and ordered my first road bike from bikes direct.com. I have read alot on here about what MIGHT happen, but thought I would post my experience. I ordered the bike on Monday night, and it arrived Friday afternoon, earlier then initially expected. The box was in good condition, ( 1 damged corner, but no rips) and the contents were well packed and wrapped. It took me about 1 hour to put it together, and that includes putting handles bars on wrong the first time (don't ask!!!). The directions were not very helpfull, but the only assembly left to do was install the seat, handle bars, front brakes, pedals the the clip on aerobars.

I took it out for a short ride, spent about another 15 mins adjusting for comfort, and took a nice hour ride. Overall I am avery happy with it so far - I may drop the $25 on my LBS to have them tune it up in case I messed anything, but even if I do that I saved $400 on a solid road bike.

I bought a bike from their ebay cousin and I am very happy with it so far. My only complaint is the same as yours, not enough directions. I had to guess on the aero bars and made many adjustments to that and the seat, but I think I figured it out. I'm not too happy w/ the seat post though. It would be nice if I could adjust the angle and put the front down a bit. But so far, thats my only complaint.

I put it together and still brought it to the LBS for a tune up/check up to make sure everything was tight and right. And because I had LBS guilt, I bought new supplies w/ some of the money I "saved" - foot pump, sunglasses, repair/inflater kit, shoes etc. So he is still making the same amount of profit from me as if I bought one of his bikes, I just have a new bike and more stuff now.

I personally feel I got a better bike than my buddy who bought his at a LBS for the same amount of $$ (even w/ my extra purchases) so I would do it again.

Just bought a Nemesis on Saturday.  Its on its way!  Perhaps I'll throw in an update when I get it.  (Supposed to be here Thursday.)  I think I'm taking it straight to the LBS to have them set it up and get a proper fit.

Keep me posted, that was the bike I originally wanted, but had to compromise w/ my wife and went w/ the Mirage Pro.  So far, Im actually glad I went w/ the MP.  My road biking isnt what it used to be (I switched to MTB's 20 years ago) so I am able to go aero or standard handle bar positioning.

Thought I would add in my 2 cents...

I have had a Nemesis through BIkes Direct since spring of 2006. So far, the bike has treated me very well. I did snap the drailleur hanger a couple weeks ago (which caused a bit of a chain reaction of Carnage) But that is fixed, i rode it the other day, and all is well in the world again.

You can't go wrong at that price point.

Good luck, happy racing!

I did the same thing and have been very happy with my bikesdirect bike.

LOL LBS guilt!  I assuaged mine by buying some tools and a seatbag from the nice knowledgeable kid who had been helping me the week before.

I'm lucky enough to live in a city that has the lbs, Cycle Spectrum, that is basically a bikesdirect store.  I've had my nemesis for over a year and love it.  Enjoy your new ride.

Congratulations.  I'm still hesitating with Bikes Direct.  I like the Nemesis, but can't decide between the '08 with 105 or the '09 with Dura-Ace.  Price difference is $300.  I'm also a little concerned about getting the right size.  It'd be a bummer to get the bike and realize a different size would have fit much better.  So I sit here and wait and do nothing.....

That would be nice.  Then I could get myself professionally fitted.  The sales tax would definitely be worth it.
