Subject: Sylvania: Another Great Race.
It was a great morning at Sylvania with cool temperatures and light winds and an odd twist with the race being wetsuit legal.

Swim start in our wave was fast and a lead group quickly established itself to put a good chunk of time on the single file chasers up to 5 minutes behind out of the water. Typically nice paved transition area with a ton of volunteers along with the use of the Tam-O-Shanter indoor sports facility (including massage and showers!).

Out on the bike there was a light headwind going west on the course making it critical to maintain a good aero position and focus on power into the wind. At the north/south turn the wind went across us and, with the right wheels, became an advantage. Coming back east was flat out with a tail wind all the way to the transition area. Every intersection well marshalled by volunteers and police.

T2 was like lightening and out onto the run where I saw old friend Ken O'Day in the crowd and got a chance to slap high five with him. As usual, my fastest mile was the first one off the bike and then it was hang on for the ride. The run course was flat and fast and melted into a nice winding neighborhood in the final 2 miles.

I think I got outkicked by a fellow at the line for an overall spot (he wasn't in my age category) but overall a good race with good legs for the day.

I ran into a few BT'ers there like "Ranger" and "travljini" who had a mechnical before the start but said she was doing the swm and run. Nice awards ceremony afterward on the lake with good food too.

Matt West won the day in 1:59:26 with Kattie Rosa stopping the clock in 2:20:01 for the women's overall. Her husband, a favorite athlete of mine, Adriano Rosa of Brazil won the Master's race in a blistering 2:07:01 just one day after hosting his own triathlon in central Michigan with several hundred competitors. Rosa is renowned for being the person in Michigan with more triathlon finishes than any other athlete at over 300 races completed.

A special Collegiate Division was nearly swept by the powerhouse Michigan State University Triathlon Team in a blur of green and white. Jun Yamaguchi of Indiana took the Collegiate win (for Ohio State, Purdue?) in 2:05:59. Then came a huge procession of Spartans across the finish line.

I second the brilliant day!

Props to "Ranger" who did his first Oly.  Good on ya, mate!  And as luck would have it, nearly unprecedented, the swim was wetsuit legal.

I did a swim-run-a-thon, and chalk it up to "divine intervention," heart not being totally in it and all

I'm hoping at some point EE posts all the results, even DQs, b/c as I crossed the finish I quickly ran over to the timer to DQ myself, but still am interested in my swim time.

A hand to Elite Endeavors, who, as usual, put on a fine, fine, show.  The course was impressively marked, lots and lots of volunteers.

But can we just have a word about tire pumping?  I actually had serious mechanical trouble, and the lineup of folks at the "bike support" tent waiting just for air seemed, er, well, never mind

It usually takes a day for the Gaults of Gault Timing to put up the complete, overall results. I'd look for them tomorrow.

Here's where to look:

I have to agree with traveljini on the trie thing. I was running very late this morning (pulled into parking lot 15 minutes before transition was scheduled to close.) So I was frantically pulling my bike out of the the car and putting the wheels on and inflating them. When I got hit up to borrow my pump. I, in my usual fahion did not want to say no to helping someone, said sure go ahead. Luckily after a few seconds the fellow couldn't figure out how to work the pump so he handed it back and I recomended just getting to transition then worrying. I told him his best bet was to ask someone other than bike support for the pump, cause I know they can have larger issues to take care of.

I would have to say today was a good day for me. The runs (read duathlete) went great. Almost pr'd for 10k. The wind on the bike really damage me with my poor aero abilities. And the best part on the day was the almost immediate shower followed by a massage. That's livin'.

Once of the best organized races I've done! Great communication pre-race, great venue, volunteers/staff were able to answer any question. Perks were good too - tech t-shirt, good post race snacks, a full lunch later, beer??? Apparently I missed the "good" showers and massages inside...we went to head to the lake afterwards for our rinse off, but they had the beach closed and park staff directed us to the beach changing room for a shower - pretty much the coldest water ever out of a spigot.

The wind did me in a little too, but I'm a pretty crummy biker. The tail wind back in was nice, and then I had a pretty good 10K (actually since I haven't done that many stand alone 10K's, I actually PR'd this distance even though it was at the end of an Oly. tri!) An overall PR for me for an Oly. distance also, so a pretty good day!

Travljini

Nice to see you posting again.

Joe

Thanks, Joe.... Must carry on, even if it's going through the motions much of the time for now.  Darn funny thing about exercise, though, it makes one feel better  But we all know that already, eh?
