I take two approaches to the swim, either go out fast for 100 or so, or if it's a really large group, let the front go out and look for some clear space behind. Today however, I get stuck in the middle. About 50 yards, Wham, a hard hit in the face, hard enough that I'm wondering if any teeth are gone! No time to collect myself, the next second I'm feeling a hand on my back pushing me under. My thoughts....damn it's a sprint...this isn't the Olympics..ease up guys. So I'm left with only one option...swim faster and get the heck out of the water! Never saw the guy (he's probably posting about the joker who cut him off during the swim)

Dude! was that you? I about broke my hand on your face ... Just kidding. Hope you are recovering. We have sprint tris and swims/runs here once or twice a month and those things are so brutal. Way worse than any oly or HIM. But they are fun and great training for the big events.

So far I've managed to stay out of the fray on the swim. Just a few kicks to the chest and bangs on the back of the head. I did give someone a pretty bad kick to the body at the take off of the swim of Hawaii 70.3 which I felt bad about but I couldn't see behind me.

Be safe out there.

Sorry to hear that.  That sucks.

I'm a rather "dangerous peacenik".  I don't mind incidental contact when swimming in the washing machine.  No big deal.  Someone taps your foot, you brush up alongside someone, your goggles accidentally get bumped off... it's all part of the game so long as we're all civil and understanding of other racers in the water.  When I come up on someone (which is rare), if they don't move over, I go around them.  When someone bumps me in the side, I just slide over a bit to make room.  If someone gives me "the tap" I actually move over a bit to let them on by (the more frequent scenario).  We all CAN get along and do the mass swim together with minor, incidental contact.

But when someone thinks that they have the right to try and push me under and swim over top of me or grab my ankle or suit or NECK (it has happened) to pull themselves forward or endanger me in any way just because they're trying to get out of the water a mere second or two faster... watch out!  That person will come out of the water bloodied in some way.  I can feel the difference between accidental and intentional.  And I don't care about the DQ.  I'll break your nose before I drown because of you.
