Subject: Insuring a bike when you travel

So I am going to be traveling with my bike to Portland in September.  I have a hardshell case and am not too worried about packing it.  My question is: Can you insure your bike for the plane ride?  What companies do this?  Does the airline?

We will be flying Southwest, and I've heard pretty good things about taking your bike with them, but I still want to protect my investment in case it arrives shattered or doesn't arrive at all.

If you ship it, I know you can get insurance, but where do you ship it to?

This is for the AG Nationals.  Anyone else have some suggestions?

Thanks...

I looked into this when traveling with my own bike ... I purchased travel insurance, which probably covers a lot that you don't want, but for $42 the bike (as well as all my other belongings) were covered to the tune of $2500. These folks were very helpful and I wound up purchasing a policy issued by American Express.

There is a bike shop you can ship it to for Nationals. They have a package set up and will even take it to the event for you. I've been looking at this too. Right now it seems like it may actually be cheaper to fly with it than ship it.

It does seem that it would be easiest for me to just fly with it, but I haven't been able to figure out how to insure it.  I was trying to see if others have insured their bikes on planes.
