Ok, so I'm at week 4 of the 0-1mile training and seem to be really struggling.  Think it's a combo of boredome(lap repetitions, etc).  I'm going to add a 4th day; the thought of 40 laps is playing with my head.  I think my endurance is ok, but the back and forth with nothing to distract but lap counting is kicking my butt.

I hear you about the boredom.  I just wanted to let you know that I followed the plan to a "T" and it worked very well.  I am truly swimming, pretty easily, 1600 meters at a time.  It has given me a huge boost in confidence heading into my next sprint next week (500 yard swim).

I hope you can hang in there and make it through the boredom.  I'm sorry I can't offer anything to help...other than to tell you it was worth the effort for me.

boredom is the killer for me as well... I don't mind the swim training, I just get so bored that I often bail out early. Swimming is my least favorite because of the boredom factor.

OWS by time and straight distance really helps to eliminate the boredom factor.

I try to focus on one or two specifics of technique each time I swim. Recently, it's been 'staying long' and keeping my elbow high. I like to pick a lane near other swimmers because it's fun to pace off of them or race a bit now and then. The mind-numbing nature of the back-and-forth without much visual or auditory stimuli drives us all a little nuts, especially when you add in the necessity of counting laps. It does get easier, slowly, over time. The same way running for an hour is immensely intimidating the first time you do it but can develop into a standard training run, the pool can become more friendly to your psyche.
