Subject: RE: Ironman NZ elevationNo - But I know the area fairly well as I grew up 60miles from Taupo. Taupo is a great town and the lake is stunning as a Kid we would drink the water in the lake very fresh and clear whilst we were swimming in it. Only comment on the lake is the wind can blow across it I have seen 4ft -5ft breakers on the lake. This isn't common though. The bike course according to the website is flat and rolling and fairly fast. I am surprised about this as Taupo is in the central North Island which is very Volcanic and only about 100kms for the Ruaphu ski fields. They must have routed the course very carefully to make it fast. I remember volunteering when the IM used to be in Auckland. That bike course was a stinker. One thing you will need to consider is the weather in NZ around March/April can be very unpredicatble. The Crowded House song 4 x seasons in one day is a good description. Really beautiful area of the world good luck. |
