Subject: Best Tri or road bike for $500 - $1,000?
Hi Everyone,
I just started out doing triathlons and have been borrowing a friend's bike to do them. I am at a point where I really want to take my training seriously, so spin classes and stationary bikes at the gym are no longer cutting it when it comes to training!

I am looking to get a new bike of my own and I can afford $500-$1,000. I was using the Trek 1.2 Triple, but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't really shift from the drops. I'd like to find a bike in the similar price range that has that feature, and would be better for racing / training.

The bike doesn't have to be anything THAT great; I have no plans on quitting my day job. Triathlons are going to remain just a hobby. ANy recommendations on a bike that would suit my needs?

Thanks!
Mark

My thoughts for you are:

  1. Buy the bike shop; not the bike.  You would be better off finding a good bike shop that can fit you into the right bike than concentrating on any one particular bike or brand of bike that I or anyone else could suggest.
  2. Your price range is better suited to an entry-level road bike than a Tri-specific bike.
  3. You are at a good time of the year to take advantage of '08 closeouts so you might be able to buy a more expensive bike that has come down to your price range.  Again - your local bike shops are a good place to start.
  4. Consider buying used or new through the Internet only if you already know what you want to buy and what measurements fit you best.
  5. Finally, I assume you already have some gear, but my advice is to not forget some of the nice-to-haves for you bike (some would say "essential" ) like shoes and clipless pedals.

As far as your question about shifting, many road bikes have Shimano STI shifters like Sora, 105 and up that allow you to shift from the drops.

Just got a Fuji aloha for $1150, and I've seen it for $999.  If you are considering a tri specific bike, I would take a look.

How do you like the Fuji Aloha?I am looking at getting one as well.

I am in the same boat at the thread originator - I am riding ONLY for tri's and everything I have read says if that is your goal get a tri bike.

At this point I don't want to spend over $1200 and have heard the Aloha is the way to go.

Any detailed info would be great.

Thanks!!!

PS - any good bike areas in the South Barrington area?

I ended up getting a Nemesis from Bikesdirect.com  for $995 w/free shipping

Though I really don't like the aero bar, the only things I added were the bottle cages/bottle for hydration, a seat bag and spare items in case of road flats.  I've been happy thus far.

I found that the frame is the same as the Fuji Aloha and another frame from Giant.

I bought this bike knowing that I did not want to by a cheaper bike and then spend much more $$$ on upgrades.

I'm surprised at how much I love the Fuji.   I was thinking it was going to take much more to get a good bike but they really pack a lot in for that price.  Eventually the front and rear deraillers will be upgraded, but no rush right now.  This bike (especially with some race wheels) is going to be around a while.
