I completed my 2nd Sprint last weekend, and made some solid improvement over my first one from 2 months ago.  I have an interesting observation that I noticed during the 5K run portion of my recent event.......that is, no matter whether I was passing someone or being passed, I noticed a significant difference in how I was breathing compared to others.  My breathing was very audible, rapid, and shallow.  In fact, If I were being passed by me, I would have thought (by the sound) that I was dying.  Is there a right way?  Should I be focusing on breathing deeper and slower?  I've never had any formal coaching for running so I am willing to listen and try to improve.  To me, my current breathing is just my way of "naturally" trying to get my body what it needs.  Is there some secret breathing techniques that you folks use when running those incredible sub-18 minute 5ks?  Do good runners really focus on "belly breathing" and is that a more effective way to get better air exchange?

It seems your putting in a strong effort in your race to be breathing like that...that is good.

The secret is to run more... you maybe breathing hard like that because your running faster than your training has conditioned you for... I suspect you need to increase your base running amount with some longer slow runs, put in the miles training and your breathing should get better.

I'm by no means a "runner", though I'm trying my best. I've also never had formal coaching (despite begging for it during my soccer years...), but I listen and learn as much as I can.

All that said, I try to breathe fairly rhythmically. I overheard my HS cross-country coach saying to his runners at the start of a season to breathe in for four strides, out for four strides. I adjust that as needed, but I try to keep to some rhythm. So I might be pushing hard and breathe in for two strides, out for three, or even out for two, and that may change when I come to a downhill, but I try to find something that works at each point during my run.

I also try, as with swimming, to breathe out completely. The shallower my outs, the shallower my ins, and a vicious circle ensues. That help cut down on my side stitches, too.

Do not judge based on how others sound.

You might also want to check if you have exercise-induced asthma.  Among the three sports of triathlon, running is the one that gives me asthma.

Or you might just be running too fast for your fitness.  Try to slow down and see if your breathing gets better.  Together with deep breathing (emphasize on the slow/long exhale) helps me to relax on the run.
