Subject: RE: Rapid Shallow Breathing During the RunI'm by no means a "runner", though I'm trying my best. I've also never had formal coaching (despite begging for it during my soccer years... ), but I listen and learn as much as I can.
All that said, I try to breathe fairly rhythmically. I overheard my HS cross-country coach saying to his runners at the start of a season to breathe in for four strides, out for four strides. I adjust that as needed, but I try to keep to some rhythm. So I might be pushing hard and breathe in for two strides, out for three, or even out for two, and that may change when I come to a downhill, but I try to find something that works at each point during my run.
I also try, as with swimming, to breathe out completely. The shallower my outs, the shallower my ins, and a vicious circle ensues. That help cut down on my side stitches, too. |
