Subject: Has anyone tried The ZONE Diet?
Has anyone tried the zone diet? If so how was it. I saw that a Canadian Triathlete is using it. How hard are the meals to prepare etc. Just looking for a more balanced diet/meal plan. If you have a good meal plan that is easy and works well I would like to know where you got it from. Thanks for any and all help.

I think it is similar to the paleo diet, but I don't know all the details.

Basically, it advocates plenty of fruits and veggies, with some protein. Less starches. Very sound advice. However, keep in mind you will need some carbs, especially if you are doing endurance training.

Eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies does take planning. I have to go grocery shopping twice a week, for example. But it's certainly not THAT hard.

I think the Zone ratios 40-30-30 work really well for me in the off-season.  But for now, I need more carbs.  I do cook a protein with at least two meals each day but have to add in a zone-style shake with almost all protein, few/no carbs to actually hit the ratios.

As for meal plans, there are none.  The zone bars get old fast, zone delivery is expensive, and so you're best off shopping the perimeters of your grocer for the vegs, diary, meats and just mixing and matching.  Include some healthy fat each meal, focus on higher protein portions, and you'll be set.

The zoneperfect.com website has much more info -- see the rule of hand/thumb for a good visual on how Zone eating looks!

I had good luck originally with the Zone diet.  I used fitday to track my numbers and would wing it most of the day and using fitday, track myself to get all numbers to come out in the end.  After a while, I began to know what foods worked well, e.g. had the right mix.

But I'm with others - once I got heavy into training, it didn't have enough carbs for my liking.

I like it. It has worked very well for me. I find it complicated, however. Fitday is a good tool to work through your #s. I went online to get some ideas. I don't like trying to determine the ratios.

It is very effective if you can stay in the 40-30-30 ratio, but I think a BIG portion of that comes from just adjusting to healthyier foods. When I am training hard I fiond I need a bit more carbs tha the zone allows. It is very healthy though and advocates a good mix of good foods unlike Atkins or South Beach.
