Subject: Wetsuit Temp Question
I'm new to tris and I'm curious at what water temp does a wetsuit become necessary?  I'm a college student on a very tight budget and would hate to spend money renting a suit if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

In a USAT santioned event wetsuits are allowed if the temperature is 78 degrees or below.  If water temp is below 84 degress but over 78 then wetsuits are allowed but you're not eligible for awards.  How comfortable you'll be in cold water without a wetsuit depends on your body composition, tolerances, and how hard you're working.  I'm sure some with more experience than I will weight in but for me, if the temp gets below about 65 I'm mighty uncomfortable without a wetsuit - but then I get cold easily.

If you're shooting for a competitive time it seems that wetsuits are generally advised if they're allowed.  The extra buoyancy will speed you up a bit...

I detest cold water so I like a wetsuit. My wife can't stand to be hot but even she admitted that doing an Oly in 72 deg. water ended up giving her a pretty good chill...

Like above post said....it's all up to what you tolerate. I'd find out the expected water temp. and if easily wetsuit legal, it would def be a help to you during the race. Price-wise, they aren't too bad to rent...$35 at F2R.com....then again, I am past the college days...thankfully
