I'll just echo the advice many others have given: ride lots!

Welcome to BT!

Ride lots.

Kind of tough to be more specific without more information about your current bike fitness... but much time in the saddle over varied terrain will build your bike base.

Use the logging feature here on BT to help track your progress.  It's a great resource.

Two words.

The first one is ride.

I bet you can guess the second one

PS: Welcome to BT. You've come to the right place.

sounds like you've got the general idea from the above responses. with 6 months to go try throwing in a long ride once a week and build it by 30 min each week. give yourself a break every three or four weeks. see if you can find a century ride near 6 weeks out. good luck and happy riding.

I used to have a hunch ScottoNM was you, but the new picture pretty much sealed the deal. I've had extra time at home (and in hospital) after our new son was born two months early, so i'm prowling the forums for tips on "fast". thanks for the welcome!

You need to ride, a lot. Your rides should mainly be in zone 2 and 3. your speed will seem slow, but after a few months, you will realize how much faster you are.
