Subject: Custom Food - serving sizes

Hey guys,

I was thinking about this and it seems like it'd be a great way of having a lot of flexibility in the custom foods (especially for those of us psychotic enough to actually weigh our foods).

I, for one, don't always eat food based on the serving size recommended on the container (yogurt, for example).  Something that I think would be really helpful would be to have multiple types of "sizes" in the custom foods.  For example, it would be really great if I could put food in either per gram  or per cup or per serving

Let's say that I'm eating a piece of bread - the nutrition information is 100 calories/1 slice (50g).  When I input the food, it would be great to have the option of either putting in the calories per serving size (1 slice) like it is now AND/OR per 50 grams where the system then calculates the calories per gram.  That way, if my next slice of bread happens to weigh 75g, the system will automatically put 150 calories in.  Am I making sense?

I see the custom food input screen as being something like:

Name of food: ___________________

Amount (number of units): _________ (in this case 50 if inputting grams or 1 if inputting slices)

Units: _____________ (with a selection of units, such as "serving" which would be the 1 slice or grams, ounces, cups, ml,  teaspoons, tablespoons, etc)

The system could then do the math to calculate the values based on what you put in for amount*units.  So, for example, I just input my cereal.  I don't always eat 56 grams of cereal (the serving on the box), but when I input it the custom food, it'd be great to be able to input 56 grams, so that if I eat 67 grams next time, I can put that in and the nutrition calculator without having to do the math of how many 56g servings are found in 67g of cereal.

I might not have been clear.  It totally makes sense in my head but may not translate very well, haha.

I usually eat 1 cup of cereal, but the serving size is 3/4 c.  So I just change the quantity from 1 to 1.25. Not exact, but close enough. you could get much closer if you did the math out, but I am too lazy, and it's close enough to keep me honest- I only work in 1/4 increments or I'd make myself insane...

I don;t weigh my food either, I just go by what I stuff in a measuring cup or what the package says...

I used to go by cups, but then I started weighing my food and often found huge discrepancies.  Since then, I weigh.  Personal preference...but it works for me.

I think I see what you are saying, let us think about this.  We do plan to redesign the nutrition logger to make it easier to use, this can be part of it.

Thanks Ron - I think it would go a long way to usability.  Personally, I don't always eat the exact same amount of yogurt, milk, or whatever else.  I think that this would be very user-friendly way of entering amounts.

It just may not be coder-friendly - I have no idea
