Subject: 40th Birthday Triathlon

Hi

A group of friends and I are hoping to do an Olympic distance triathlon for our 40th birthdays and would really like to know if anyone can recommend a great event that is not too difficult to get an entry. The event can be anywhere in Europe, UK or USA but needs to be sometime between July and Sept 2010 and the more visually stunning the location the better.

I am an experienced triathlete but some of the guys may be novices.

Essential criteria:

Olympic Distance. Open Water Swim. Not draft legal. Accepts both Individuals and Relay. Has to be a great location with great scenery and decent post race booze-up (event party would be good but just a good pub/bar would do). Needs to be a biggish event with 300+ competitors for added excitement and added pre-race nerves.

Non-essential criteria:

Not some ultra difficult event where drowning is likely or scales some snow capped peak. Wetsuit swim. Preferably not too hot.

Really look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks

ChewMagroo

What about the Nation's Tri?  It's held in Washington DC mid-September.  In fact, the 2008 race is today.   Can't get much more scenic than biking past the Lincoln & Jefferson memorials, around the mall, and finishing the race in front of the U.S. Capitol.  The 2009 race has already been scheduled for Sept 13 next year, so I would expect the 2010 race to be in the same time frame.

Thanks for that, it looks impressive.

I think we would prefer one not in a city. When I say scenic I really mean countryside with beautiful surroundings.

I would highly recommend St Anthony's. Stay at the Vinoy hotel (right at race site) and enjoy the St Pete food and nightlife. I did this race in 2008 and will make it a regular part of my racing schedule.

You probably need a race that folks can get into easily. St. Anthony's is in late April and fills in a day. I love the race but doesn't really fit his criteria.

Have you tried using the race database?  A quick search shows 135 Olympic distance triathlons in the US between July and Sept 2008.  I realize that's a lot, but it seems like some place to start at least.  Perhaps you could read race reports and narrow it down a bit.  Good luck.
