Today if finally broke through the 12 min/mile time, 11:33/mile, and dropped 13 minutes off of my 4.5 route. I last ran it 3 weeks+ ago. 51 min vs 1:04. I feel like i am finally starting to make some real progress.

together with my epiphany, relaxing, in swimming I might actually become MOP instead of BOP.

Congrats, Kevin!! Running is my downfall. I'd be really happy to break a 12min/mile. I signed up for a half mary in December just to make myself concentrate on my running. Way to go!

That's awesome, running is definitely my least favorite section of the tri. My best time has been 11:41/mi for 3.5 miles in my last tri. Running is going to be my winter focus, so in the spring hopefully I will dislike it alittle less.

Dude, that's Weird!!

Not your running milestone - thats great and Congrats!!

What's weird is that I had an almost exact breakthrough myself a couple of weeks ago ... and my name is Kevin also!

Anyhow, see my other post under "The Old Clyde Me vs. The New Me " ...

But to summarize, I was stuck at a distance of 3.2 miles and an avg of 15:30 to 15:45 min per mile.

Week and a half ago a friend took me out running and we did 4.25 miles at about a 12:30 min per mile pace .... what??!!

Since I have ran this same 4.25 mile course 3 or 4 times and can consistenly do it with an average 12:31 to 13:05 min per mile pace .... quite a breakthrough for me !!!!

Congrats Kevin 1 & Kevin 2 .... that's awsome. I'll never forget when I had my break through run as well, what a great feeling! Just wait for your next break through... it gets even better (than sex, not really) but the thought keeps me going! LOL!

Again .... GREAT JOB GUYS! WE CLYDES/ATHENAS ROCK!!!

Just a little update on my running milestone as well,

Went out running this past Thursday and ran that same hilly, 4.25 mile route in 49:43, although I sprinted in the last 100 meters or so.

For purposes of calculating a minutes per mile pace, I'll use 50 minutes.  Will anyone please tell me if my math is correct, cause it gets kinda confusing converting from minutes to seconds and back again.

50 min * 60 secs per min gives me 3000 seconds.

3000 seconds divided by 4.25 miles equals 705.882 seconds per mile.

705.882 sec/mile divided by 60 secs in a minute equals 11.764 minutes per mile.  To get an accurate seconds - don't I have to multiple the .764 times 60?  Which gives 45.84 ... which should be the real seconds count .... so ...

.... if my math is correct ... I ran 4.25 miles at an average pace of 11:46 minutes per mile.

Which is under a 12 min/mile pace which is something I thought would be years before I ever got to that milestone.

I think your math is right on but its a lot easier to just divide your minutes by the miles you ran.

50/4.25=11.76

.76 of a minute is .76*60=45.6 seconds for a pace of 11 minutes 45.6 seconds.

Nice job on the run, you should get a Garmin to run with and it will make all those calculations for you.

Thanks!

Yes, a Garmin and many other things are still on my "to buy" list for this new sport of mine called triathlons.

I guess the reasonI started doing the crazy math is because my run time were actually more like 52:40, 55:33, 53:20, etc .... and my last run was 49:43 actually ... it's just that since I sprinted in the last 100m or so ... I figured that if I had stayed at my pace I would have crossed the 4.25 mile point at 50 minutes even ....

In the case of even minutes you can use your formula, but what about something like 49:43?  This is why I converted the total run time to seconds to begin with, and then having to divide it by 60 at the end ....

You can still use the same formula but you have to convert the seconds into tenths and hundreths.  You do that by dividing by 60.  So for your 49:43 that would be the same as 49.72 minutes, then you divide that by the 4.25 is 11.7 minutes per mile.

I know its a bit of a sickness but when I'm running I will look at my mile times on my Garmin and figure out the pace I am running in my head.

You guys could use pace calculators like this... http://www.dorkrocket.com/calculator.jsp

Congratulations!

I can't wait until I can actually run for an extended period of time, then I'll worry about timing

Hey, it's a great feeling!  I'm just now at the point where I can legitimately start looking at my times and thinking of ways to improve it, versus just concentrating on whether or not I can even finish my run.

I guess I should really still be focusing on LSD, long slow distance runs and increasing to 5 miles, then 6, etc ... before I start to worry abou times ... but I'm kinda a different case.

I only gave myself 5 weeks training time and 1 week taper for my first sprint on Sept 14th, then I have another Oct 18th ... so I'm just cramming in everything I can and trying to both get my distance and improve my time ... once the Oct 18th race is over ... I'll back off and start from square 1 again ... and train like I'm supposed to ... get in LSD distance first then improve on times.

Nope, that's actually pretty good.  I do the same sorts of things as it helps take my mind off the running, the pain, the labored breathing, etc .... I actually like doing math in my head while running ... (but then again I have never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shed either ...)

I guess I could start another thread about my running milestones or about Running Milestones in general ... but thought it would be interesting to log everyone's running milestones in the same thread.

Just hit another incredible milestone this morning!!  My longest run up till this morning was 4.25 miles and my best time for that distance was 50 minutes (which is an 11:45 min/mile pace.)

This morning I went out to Salem Lake, they have a really nove 7 mile trail around this small lake and I intended to run 4.5 or 5 miles (possible 5.5) and walk out the rest.

But .... I was able to keep the legs churning and ran the entire 7 miles!!!!  I know this violates the 10 percent increase limit per week - but I just felt that I had some extra in the tank (and also felt I had some left in the past couple of weeks at the end of my 4.25 runs.)

Completed this in 1:22:23, so rounded to 1:23 or 83 minutes, that comes to an 11:51 min/mile pace !!!  Which is just totally AWESOME for me !!

I was actually entertaining some ideas of trying an Oly next year and now that dream seems to be getting more realistic every day now!!

CONGRATS!!!! klowman thats so awesome. You must feel so great right now. I just finished my longest run ever also at 2.51, I felt like I had more in the tank but was afraid to push it.

Congrats again...are you going to re-work your training now?

I'm not really sure what to do.  You read so many posts and training plans about not doing more than a 10 percent increase ... but I just had the energy and legs to go the full 7 miles and so I went for it.

That was this past Saturday, I went right back out Sunday and practiced a little "mini" triathlon.  I parked my bike out back behind the YMCA at the track, went inside to the pool, swam 200 meters, got out and pulled on my shoes, ran out to the bike, got on and rode for about 10-12 miles, came back and parked it, took off my helmet and put on my visor, then hit the track for about 2 miles.

I can't sleep right now, I'm actually due to get up around 05:20 am this morning and head to Charlotte to run my 2nd sprint tri - start time 08:00 am Saturday.  My little mini last weekend was to prep for this race.

I guess I will try to make 5 or 5.5 miles my normal run, 7 miles my long run, and 4 miles my short run - and I'll see how that goes.  At the same time I've been decreasing the number of rest or off days between runs ... up till a few days ago I was up to running just about every other day.

I think I'm going to try to run a couple of days back to back with 1 day rest, then 2 more days back to back, and eventually do some running during my lunch break at work.

Anyhow, I gotta read up on what should be my best approach or ask some of the running veterans on this board what they would suggest.

Thanks for the encouragement and I'll keep everyone posted!!
