Subject: shimano 9-spd cassette came loose on ride
On a ride yesterday I found my two smallest cogs "slipping".  After further inspection I found the locking ring had came loose and the cogs actually were able to get off the splines that lock them in place in the hub.  The bike is a Trek Equinox 7 and the hubs are Shimano 105 (if I remember correctly) and only seen 6 months of use.  From what I understand, this should never happen?  That lock ring should be torqued and has knurling that help keep it set in place.  Anyone had this happen?  I know I can reset it (assuming the threads aren't fouled up now) but I am afraid dirt may have gotten inside the hub, I don't know if I should attempt to clean and re-grease the hub, any advice?  I am quite mechanically inclined, just never been into this area...

I think the chance of dirt getting into the hub body itself is about the same whether or not the locking ring is on.  I'd just re-seat the lock ring and ride away.  FWIW, I don't use any kind of torque numbers when I tighten my lock ring, I just reef it down pretty snug so that you can definitely feel the "notching effect" as it locks on.  I have never had a lock ring loosen up in tens of thousands of riding miles.

if you dont have the lockring tool, I would take it back to the bike shop that you bought the bike from and they would be able to put the lock rings on in about 5 min. Ive seen alot of people try and do this without the proper tools and they end up crossthreading the part and doing more dammage than if they would have just brought the bike into the shop in the first place. I understand wanting to do this yourself, I am the same way. 80% of bike maintinance is all about having the right tools. the bike comes shipped to the bike store with the cassette already in place and torqued. I doubt your local bike shop would charge you anything for this, especialy if you bought your bike from them. good luck

I have had it come loose once. Not really that big of a deal more of a mental scare. Just invest in a chain whip and a cassette tool. Even ever you take the bike apart to clean it, just make sure that it’s on good and tight.

 I picked up the tool for approx. $10 and had no problem putting it back together.  Shifts perfectly again.  Thanks for the advice....  Treadman Du on Saturday, here I come  ;-)
