Subject: 12 months training.

Hey,

I've been training for an half-marathon the last 3 months and now I'm ready for a new training. I'm planning of doing one or two olympic triathlon next summer and than an Ironman at Montreal in 12 months.

Because of the winter, I can't train outside until april. I was planning to train about 10 hours per week inside, doing 4/5 hours of strength and 5+ of running/bike/swim. Then, when april comes, I would do a 20weeks training for my ironman with only outside training. For that, I'll have a coach following me this winter and a nutritionist helping me to lose as much fat as possible.

I need your help. I want to know if what I am planning to do makes sense and what I should change that doesn't work.

Thanks a lot!

PS: I'm a french canadian so I'm sorry for the mistakes I prolly did.

Welcome to BT!

Your plan sounds reasonable. I would maybe suggest maybe a little less strength training, shifting the time to cardio base building.

Your coach will be better able to work the details to best fit your goals, current fitness level, amount of weight loss you are shooting for, race times, etc.

only 5 hours week of swimming, running, and biking?

for me I thinking about 4 hours of swimming, 5 hours of running, and 6 hours or so of biking. I still think I will need to find a way of getting in more biking. hmm. I will have to figure it out.

Why all the strength training?

Hopely I will be at that level by January.

What your doing makes sense, but I would say to trim back your weight training a bit and focus more on building your aerobic base.  When the spring rolls around, you're going to quickly ramp up your tri-specific training times and you want to make sure you have the aerobic foundation to support that increase in training.

Focus on losing weight during the off-season because, when you start your IM-specific training, you're going to naturally start to eat more and be more hungry.  You'll likely continue to lose weight and BF as your body re-structures itself in response to the increased training.

It seems that you have the proper mindset and a willingness to put in the work necessary to achieve your IM goal.  Follow the advice of your coach, and don't be afraid to ask questions if you aren't sure of something or find yourself in difficulty.  A good coach can explain not only the "why" in general terms, but the "why" specific to you as an athlete.

Good luck and enjoy the adventure.

That is why I am doing so much strength, I find it hard to do aerobie inside during all the winter. I might continue that way for 3 months and than start doing more aerobie in january to be ready for my summer's ironman training.
