Subject: Toyota US Open Tri water temp/wetsuit

Anyone got any feedback on water temps and the need/no need for a wetsuit for this race.

Water temps will probably be high 70s. The water was plenty warm last year, yet they "found" a way to make it wetsuit legal (as Aaron likes to say, they measured the temp "in some shade and a bucket of ice").

Will you NEED a wetsuit? No.
Will you be ABLE to wear one? Yes.

You would want to wear one if legal as most everyone is much faster in the water with a wetsuit than without. Wetsuit helps you float so your body position is much better than usual hence the faster speeds. The improvement is generally better for slower swimmers than the fastest swimmers, not sure where you are on that front.

There is a thread about several places to rent one before the race if you want. Take a look there. As well, if you decide to rent or buy one, try and get a swim or two in it before the actual race to make sure it fits okay and you are comfortable in it. Last year they did a practice swim the day before the race and since you had to drop off your bike on Saturday anyways, it was convenient.

Ok; I'll ask again. Given current temps, will wetsuits be legal. Plus, I don't wanna be the only one out there looking like a total newby goofball. Please advise.

According to the internet, current water temp. at Joe Pool Lake is 76 degrees... wetsuit legal. It shouldn't be going up with the cooler mornings we will be having this week. I'll be wearing mine!

There will be plenty of people with and without them. You won't look like a goofball either way.

You just need decide what you are more comfortable race wise and if you think you might benefit from the wetsuit. Think of a wetsuit like a security blanket if you haven't done an open water race before. A wetsuit will help you immensly, at least mentally, if you are afraid of not being able to stay afloat.

I am racing there and I will be without one no matter what the temperature is. I ordered one a couple weeks ago, knowing that whether this race is wetsuit or not I'm still going to need one in the future and it just got to me yesterday. It does not fit at all, so I am sending it back today. Where can you rent them around here? Anywhere in fort worth that rents them? Also, another newbie question. Is the wetsuit legal temperature 74 deg. or 78 deg.?

78 and under is wetsuit legal per USAT rules. Over 78 and under 84, athletes MAY wear a wetsuit, but won't be eligible for awards (even those that do not have a shot at an award still typically don't wear one if it's over 78). And Race Director can disallow wetsuits at his/her discretion...not to name any names like Jack Weiss, but some don't permit them at all regardless of temps.

Haven't rented before, but perhaps RBM or Keifer (Plano) rent wetsuits.
