Subject: Anyone had your ForeRunner HR strap stop working ?

I've had my FR 305 for around 1.5 years and it has worked great but recently have had the HR function become very flaky. Initially, I thought changing the battery (on the HR strap) would fix it since I noticed that there was a lot of gunk inside . Replaced the battery and cleaned the insides as best I could.

It worked well for maybe 4-5 days but then started acting up again. Either the HR stops displaying on the watch or after i adjust , it shows some no. and then resets after quite a while to a higher (more accurate) no. Or like today, it shows my HR at 60-70 when it should have been displaying ~ 140-160 .

While I know I can probably buy a replacement , was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with FR ? If so, are there any simple solutions or do I have to buy a replacement ?

I would try scrubbing the bejeezus out of the contacts with soap, water, and a scrub brush. Might just be gunk on the contacts. Just a guess.

The same EXACT thing just happened 2 days ago to my Polar.  It is 1.5 years old too.  It gave me the excuse to go buy the Garmin 405!  Not crazy about it for my gym workouts but it is awesome for road running.

Check that the strap is tight enough around your chest.  That sometimes helps.

I am sending mine back to the manufacturer...

I have a 305 for 1.5 years and I have never had the HR work correctly. I've called Garmin 10+ times, sent the unit back for repair..they exchanged it, tried another strap still won't work.

I do have a HR I know

I use a Polar HRM just fine and a power meter with HR strap. I just don't get why I can't get the stupid 305 to pick up my HR. When I run it may work for 5-10' then it either drops off to zero or says my HR is 45-50.

I've given up trying to get it to work. Any ideas?

Dr Pete x2

I've had that exact problem with my Garmin 301 and cleaning the contacts on the strap does the trick.
I've also heard that using gel on the contacts will help. I've never tried it because cleaning usually did the trick.

After 1.5 years, my strap lost a lot of its elasticity. It couldn't keep the thing from sliding around and my HR readings were all over the place. I bought a replacement strap (not the transmitter) for $7 and it has made all the difference.

Other than that, follow the recommendations posted above: clean the contacts and use a little of that gel.

Maybe your heart has stopped beating.

Mine has worked fine for a long time.  But my heart is still beating, so that could be the difference.

Did do the cleaning ... alot ... but the damn thing refuses to listen to my HR

and yes , I know the strap is tight ... even though it has lost its elasticity I adjust every time I wear it . also, I wet (with water) the elctrodes part of the strap before using it and traditionally it has caught my HR just fine . here's the thing , even though I just changed the battery less than a week ago (or maybe 10 days max.) , there was a lot of fluid leakage when i opened it today . hence , am thinking its a deeper problem ... guess I definitely need to make the support call to Garmin !

any suggestions on good i.e. cheap places to buy a replacement for the FR 305 ? Amazon has some retailers at 40+tax/shipping

the irritating thing is that I had just restarted my HRM training less than a few weeks back ! figures that the device would stop working
