"E-rumor" is a general category for these mass-type e-mails that go around.  Some, like this one, are true and someone really does need help.  Others, like the one with child requesting e-mails because he/she has cancer, are completely fake and done as a prank or a joke.  As with many rumors that we hear at work or from families, some are real and some are not.  So, rather than calling this a "scam" or a "fake," when it may be true, this site adds the tag "e-rumor" as an attempt to keep any judgement statements off the stories until they can be evaluated and verified/ de-bunked.
