HELP!!!OK, here's the thing...I have totally committed to get myself back into shape after a long battle with illness (9+months). So, because of limited workouts, but not limited appetite, I gained about 10 pounds in that nine months - and that's on top of the 25-30 pounds I already had to lose! So I have some questions. I weigh a shameful 196 for a 5'6 female. I did some research and found out that to maintain that weight I need to eat 2100 cal a day. Obviously I don't want to maintain that weight, and I found out that one needs to burn 3500 cal in one week to lose one pound. Am I on track so far? Well, so I decided that I could cut down to 1300 - 1500 cal a day and lose weight fairly easily. So far, I have always stayed around 1300 to 1400 cal. That's on top of my 4 day a week workouts. I feel that I am eating healthy, but I am not seeing the weight come off. IE. Morning mini wheat cereal with skim milk, mid morning snack cantelope 1C, lunch turkey chili 1C with side salad and ff dressing, dinner homemade veggie soup and salad. When I want something sweet, I eat one of my kid's kool aid popsicles. I have been keeping a nutrition log on the site and have been pleased and surprised that I have not been hungry. But why is nothing happening? What's up??? Am I being to impatient? Am I off in my calories??? Maybe I should add that I have been doing this since last Saturday, but the scale hasn't moved, not even .5 pounds. |

HELP!!!Let me start by saying that I lost 73 1/2 pounds 6 years ago, so I have some experience in this area. A few thoughts: 1) Your body is like a bank cashing an out of state check, it can take 7 to 10 days (on average) for the changes we make (like drinking water for example) to show a difference at the scale 2) Based solely on your post, I would venture a guess that you need more protein 3) How much are you working out? Food is fuel, nothing more. If you are taking in too few calories, the fire (metabolism) can't burn properly. This is NOT an excuse to go eat after working out, but if you're doing some hard workouts and eating too few calories you may not see the results you want. 4) I know it's frustrating, we want results, yesterday, but stick with it! It may take some trial and error to get where you want to be and figure out what works for you but it can and WILL be done. Lani |

Veteran 104![]() greensboro, NC area | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!You may be right. I work out at least 4 days a week. I alternate days - weight training and running/biking one day, then cardio "group exercise" classes on the other days. |

Member 159![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!Hey! I always get frustrated, too, but have really been learning a lot through this website. One comment . . . are you sure you're eating enough? If you're supposed to be eating 2100 to maintain, then we did you cut back 800 calories (at times)? I think this might be too low. Perhaps your body is trying to hoard all the calories. Also, maybe you just need to be more patient. I lose weight . . . but REALLY slowly. Which I guess is good because that means it is more permanent. Whatever you do, DON'T give up . . . that definitely won't work. Thanks, Tri_jean |

Now granted, I'm working out every day/almost every day. She told me to eat 1800-2000 calories/day. I've been eating 1600-1900/day. She said to eat 3 small meals but 3-4 snacks per day. Every meal/snack should have some protein in it. She also said that my meals should decrease in carbs as the day goes on. Eat a carby breakfast but dinner shouldn't be too carby. I'm still working on the information she's given me but it seems to be working. In the past week... I'm down 7 lbs. |

Veteran 104![]() greensboro, NC area | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!Awesome! I did have a trainer several years ago, and something that you said rang a bell. He told me that I needed to eat several times a day and that everytime I ate (with exception of breakfast) needed to have some protein. So thinking back on that and what you just said, that might very well be the case. I also may need to up my cal somewhat. That's going to be hard for me to do without thinking that I am satatoging my diet, but I think that he had me somewhere around 1600 a day minimum. I guess it's just getting back into that mindset. |

One thing she told me that helps is that you are an athlete (me? an athlete? yeah right?) and you need to eat to fuel your body and fuel your workouts. Too many calories can result in a gain, too few can result in sluggishness. |

Master 2033![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!I have to second the idea that you probably are not getting enough calories. I just saw the nutritionist last week and I was told 1800-2000 calories per day 55-60% carb 20-35% fat 10-15% protein. She advised me to include a mix of all three in these proportions at every meal with breakfast being the largest meal of the day. I have been doing a fairly good job of that and am loosing weight. When I cut my calories to much I have bad workouts and sometimes GAIN weight. It is very important that you eat enough to fuel yourself without getting too much. just my .02 for what it's worth... |

Extreme Veteran 301![]() ![]() ![]() New Zealand | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!I hear ya re the weigh issues, I am pretty close to the same weight and height as you, and am having a hard time losing, I seem to put weight on so easily and its really hard to get rid of it! I think consistency is the key, I can be really good for a few days and then i slip back into bad habits. This week I have set myself some goals that should help me to lose weight over the long term, including eating smaller portions by using a smaller plate and half filling it with good vees, then a quarter of the plate some type of low GI carb, then the other 1/4 is protein. Also I am adding a banana to my breakfast to try and keep me fuller for longer - didn't make much difference today so might add some whole grain toast also, (along with my home made muesli and low fat yoghurt). My other thing is I am going to commute on the MTB to work twice a week on top of my current exercise. If I can commit to these few things then I can build on them later. Not sure if anything helps, but I guess I'm saying to pick a few things to work on and once they become a habit, add another challenge, or like me you may get demoralised and it all turns to custard! |

Veteran 104![]() greensboro, NC area | Subject: RE: What's up with me? Am I being too impatient? HELP!!!Thanks for all of the advice. I weighed in yesterday and am down 1.5 pounds from last week. I have to be so strict on myself though. Logging the food has been helping cause I feel more accountable. |
