Subject: The fitness center endurance sport challenge
I am planning on doing a fitness center challenge sometime this week. This is something myself, along with a few friends came up with a while back.
If you are interested in doing this simply reply to the post, and come back and log results once you have completed the challange (or as much of it as you feel ok doing!). you can stop anywhere you like time wise, however, you must meet the basic rules to have it count:

Rules:
You must complete each of the four sports (Swimming, Biking, Running, Rowing)
They much be done in that order
These must be done indoors (ie tredmill run, not on a track or outside)
no more than 10 min between events.
You may complete any time between now and dec 15th

If you hit the full total times for this the challenge consists of:

1 hour swim
1 hour stationary bike
1 hour tredmill run
1 hour row on the erg (rowing machine)

to encourage others to join in, and because we decided not everyone is this stupid, there will be three levels this year, a Goldand Bronze level. (if people show interest i would like to see this happen monthly and we might add an intermediate distance of 45 min)

Gold is the full one hour in each
Bronze is 30 min of each

Same rules for transitions still apply, still log total distances

Starting today, we'll run this through Dec, anytime between now and then do the workout and log it on this post, and we'll have some fun breaking up winter training!

good luck!

This sounds interesting and fun; however, finding a location with all legs of the challenge might be difficult.  Once I find a location I will start with the 30 min legs and move up to the hours.  I will let you know once I have a better idea.

how about if you take your own bike w/indoor trainer and lock your bike when you swim.

other easy solution is to go to gym when nobody else does. how about that!!!

antti asu - 2009-01-21 3:02 PM not gonna do it, though. no rowing machina in my gym. or pool.

And here lies the problem.  None of the gyms I can go to have all the equipment.  The best I have is run, bike, row with a pool ten plus minutes away.

jesus 1 hour erg on its own would destroy me! i used to train people at my school how to row and take them out on the river. 30 minutes was our standard workout lol. Scares me how many people do it so badly at the gym.

Are you going to havea minimum strokes per minute or something?

While all my rowing workouts in college used to be significantly longer than an hour doing an hour of even easy rowing would be horrible after swimming and biking and running.

I would agree that people at the gym do not know how to use an erg properly. I see so many people using it in such a way that it make me think...that is an injury waiting to happen...

hell even the trainers at the gym dont seem to know.

24 spm is about a perfect spm rate for normal rowing. you want to make sure all the power is coming out of the legs, its all about timing it so your arms get back as your legs reach full extension and you should feel the power through your knees .  I went on the erg today, and was pulling about 6 times as much calories per hour etc whilst doing a slower stroke rate and not looking like a .
The problem in most places is people start bending their knees agin before they have finished pulling back with their arms and thus they dont keep their back straight.

Dont forget the people who constantly roll their hips and almost look like they are sitting on the small of their backs...geez makes me squirm when I see it...and the trainers have no idea about proper usage, it is like they have never used one themselves before even.

Hmmmm I might take you up on this challenge.  Currently I can only last 15 minutes on the rowing machine but have wanted to start adding it in.  I have a few logistics to work out - my pool only has a 20 minute limit on the lane etc Maybe they'll make an exception if I block the time.  Having the swim first always sucks because my hair is *soaking* on the bike and everyone looks at you like a sweaty freak   Will advise... This would be a tough one for me which is why I'm tempted!

if you have only made it 15 min,

start smaller, do 15 or 20 min blocks of each, would still make for an hour and 20 min workout.

i am seriously thinking about rowing a bit this fall and racing some, it keeps killing me to go to races and see some of the people winning the singles races, and knowing even in the shape i am in now i would prob still be faster.

although i did a 2k the other day and was only at 6:55, so a solid 35 sec of my PR:-(

Ok count me in!  I'll figure things out at the gym.  I'll start adding the rowing into my workouts after my next tri.  If I start small then I should be able to do the full hour by Dec. and will be good to shake things up a bit.

You should - even if just for something different and keeping in shape after the tri season - or just to enjoy the spirit of competition.  I've always loved watching it and grew up near the Henley Regatta (large rowing centre in Ontario) which was a fun way to spend your weekends.  Never tried anything more than a rowing machine myself... too chicken back then!  Good luck with it!

I think this is a perfect challenge for the off season! I will definately be doing it (although I will have to get some rowing friends to watch me on the erg to make sure I don't do anything injurious to myself !) The gym at the UofA where I go to school has all of the above!!!
