Subject: Garmin Question
I posted this under gear but have no answers yet. I am looking at getting a garmin. either the 305 or the 405 but they both have such a short battery life. What are people doing on longer races? I think the batt. only lasts 10 hrs and I won't even be close to that for an IM

1 - You don't wear it in the swim, so that cuts off 1+ hr
2 - the 305 has a longer battery life than the 405. If you look at all the multi-sport related reviews, not many people are recommending going to the 405 for the added cost
3 - other than that....get faster??

Buy two and switch over on the bike to run transition?  If you have a Powertap or equivalent, only use the garmin on the run.  The powertap records everything useful on the bike.

Turning off the GPS receiver saves some battery life.  Hit the lap button at each mile marker on the course.

All good

1. Get faster ,yes

2. Buy two, um.. not a chance.

3. Turn GPS off, ok

4. Don't use it in races. How come?

I'll use it in running events but only if I'm trying to hit a specific goal for myself or pacing somebody else.

Bah! Fat lot of good that did us in October, eh?

That's my main reason for getting one is for the pacing.. and multisport. Because I'm new to all this I have to make sure I stick to what level/pace I'm training at so I don't get a DNF. I have a Ipod pace thing but it's pretty limited.

Seriously if all you want to do is pace yourself, get an Ironman 50 lap or 100 lap watch and check your splits at every km marker.  If you want HR, the Polar would be the way to go.  Garmin adds in a GPS receiver, but that takes a lot of power to run which is why the battery life is short.  It's also a lot to fiddle with as others have said.  In training, it's different.  I run the trails on Burnaby Mountain.  Here the GPS is useful as I can't just drive the route.  When I travel for work, it's nice to just go run knowing that the GPS can get me back if I get lost.

Just a thought, but if you have a bike computer, turn the GPS off for the bike and just use the HRM. Get your speed, cadence, etc. from your bike computer. When you're getting near the end of the bike leg, turn the GPS back on and use it for the run. I'm not sure if that's possible or not, just an idea.
