Subject: Messaging Tips

I'm just wondering what the best ways are to communicate on BT:

1. I'm in a mentor group - how do I see what others are writing?

2.  If someone comments on a blog/log entry, and I comment back (in the blog/log), do they get notified of this?  If not, what's the best way to reply?

3. What's the best way to follow threads in the forums?

4. Is there a search feature in the forums?

Thanks!

I hope some of this is helpful--ask for clarification if you need more!

1. I'm in a mentor group - how do I see what others are writing?

Click Forums, click the Forum titled Beginner Triathlete Mentor Program, and then scroll down the list to find where your mentor group is (titled after the mentor). Click on that thread, and that should take you to your mentor group thread. If others have been posting, that's where it will appear. If you wish to post, click on Reply button.

2.  If someone comments on a blog/log entry, and I comment back (in the blog/log), do they get notified of this?  If not, what's the best way to reply?

Here's something my co-mentor wrote--I hope it's helpful.

Inspires

what are Inspires? - they are a way to leave a message of inspiration, motivation, a KIA, a simple hello to a fellow manatee - or anyone on BT

how to Inspire someone? - click on the link to their training blog - for the manatees, you should be able to do this from the table (I hope ) - once you are in their blog you will see a link that says 'inspire me' - click on that link, a window will open up and you can leave your message

how will I know if someone inspires me?  - you will see a red number to the right of the 'Inspire Me' link - that shows how many people have stopped by to inspire you - click on the 'Inspire Me' link and enjoy

how to reply to an inspire? - this is confusing (sorry marma) - if someone leaves you and inspire and you want them to see the reply - click on 'blog'  - if you are using Internet Explorer, it will open 2 new windows and you will be linked to the persons blog and their inspires - you can then find your response and reply - on Mozilla, it opens one window with two tabs and you toggle back and forth between the blog and the inspire window -

if you click on 'reply', it actually posts the reply in your blog and it's unlikely that the sender of the inspire will see your reply - I did this for months before I asked someone :/

one other thing to be aware of, is that if you 'blog' your reply to an inspire, it updates the same date the inspire was left - so if someone left you an inspire more than a day or two ago - it's probably best to go directly to their blog, otherwise it's highly likely that they will not see your reply

3. What's the best way to follow threads in the forums?

If the thread is pretty active, it will show up in New Threads. Click on Forums, then to the top left you should see a place that says New Threads. Click on that, and it lists all the active threads.

4. Is there a search feature in the forums?

Yes. Click on Forums, then at the top right, you will see something saying Search Forums.

Thanks!

re: 1. I'm in a mentor group - how do I see what others are writing?

This was actually the same question as #3, I just wrote it wrong.

re: 3. What's the best way to follow threads in the forums?

Right, I can see the threads, but our mentor thread is pretty large - I just want to see new postings, or have it sorted where new posts are at the top or bottom instead of having to search through the whole tree.

re: how to reply to an inspire?

OMG, you're kidding right?  :-)

By the way, howdy howdy to a fellow LA Tri'er! Hopefully we'll run into each other at a meeting, race or workout.

There isn't a way to sort out the new posts alone. All you can really do is scroll up through the last few posts that were made.

You could turn on e-mail notification (Click on control panel towards the top in the left bar) and that would tell you whenever there's a new post to your mentor thread. If it's pretty large and active, though, you probably won't want to do that.

The inspire thing--lots of people, myself included, have used Reply instead of Blog ... or have used the Blog button several days post-inspire and the person doesn't think to look back several days for an inspire. I figured more info was better than less!

You could ask your mentor to post an index of pages/topics covered on every 5th page like we do in our mentor thread ) Great, now he or she is going to kill me ...

Go LA!  Are you signed-up for any upcoming events?

Thanks for the info.  The inspire thing I've run into, so I guess I'll just reply.  Really appreciate all the info.

"Veni, Vidi, Voro " - love it!

Your race lineup looks awesome. Unfortunately I'm in none of them, I'm just saving up for one giant trip to IMKY this year.

You should come to some of the meetings or socials, though. They're a blast. Are you going to the Jan. 24 formal by any chance?

Thanks!  If I survive this season it'll be great. :-)

Have you done an IM yet?

I'm still debating the YEP - are you going?  I am going to the first Thursday in Feb if they have one and the Craig  Alexander meeting on 2/2.
