![]() Swim
Comments: i was at the front to start, and was passed but not run over to badly, it was reasonable, i was unable to draft because i found myself in the feet a few times and did not like it. What would you do differently?: i started on the shore side of a fifty meter line going strait out, i would have started further off shore because there was a buoy where we have to round and it was about 75 meters off shore and by the time i got to the end of swim i was very close to shore, therefore i had to swim an additional 100 to 150 meters to round the buoy and get into shore to T1. I could have done much beter but i was not going for much other than to finish without feeling like i was drowning at any point, which i did accomplish, unfortunately just made a tactical error at the start. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: i was a little slow getting my shoes, hr monitor, shirt, belt, helmet, gloves on and off running with bike, still winded from swim and long sand run to T1. I used bottled water to rinse my sandy feet and a towel to quick dry, but did not use socks in my shoes so no problem getting into my shoes, What would you do differently?: no shirt, no hr monitor, no gloves for a sprint distance in warm weather conditions ![]() Bike
Comments: loved the bike, was passing all kinds of people most of the way through the entire coarse. i was able to pace (three bikes lengths) behind a very quick lady for the first third and we passed a lot of bikes, then i overtook her, and continued passing people, i lost some ground on the hill at mid point as i was overextending myself at that point, was passed by a few people but it did not last long, and the return was a blast, on the way back a few guys passed me and then i would over take them, back and forth all the while passing lots of others at the same time, it was really fun. What would you do differently?: Nothing, this part went really well for me. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: i was a little vented when i got to the rack, stumbled putting the bike up, but no problem getting out of my bike shoes and into the runners, took a quick shot of enervitene, some gator drink, and some water, and then ran out fumbling with my ball cap and my glasses. What would you do differently?: left the ball cap and glasses. ![]() Run
Comments: i glad i had some brick training to know what to expect as i began the run, but, i still had a hell of time getting my legs going. i had to stop a few times to get my hr down and my legs moving. but they started to loosen after the first 1 to 2 km i would say and by half way i felt much better and really ready to run. that is when i picked up my pace somewhat and ran my hr to max at around 172, it was weird because it felt for a time like i could maintain that but i knew it was dumb to stay there so i backed off, bringing it back to 167, at the end with the hill it maxed up to 178. I was passed by a lot of people on the run, so i lost a lot there most of the distance. What would you do differently?: I am not sure actually, for the preparation time i had for this race, i think it went reasonably well. ![]() Post race
Warm down: They has massuesses on site! Plus lots of food and drinks every where, i just grabbed something to drink and waited my turn for nice rub down...now thats what i call a great finish! What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall fitness preparation. Tactically i lost probably two minutes on the swim.I am just learning to swim so my technique is really poor, my breathing rhythm is not smooth. My bike cadance was not bad but i know my techinique on peddle strokes can be much better. I need to keep my back straiter, and make smother circles. My 5 km run pace is like a 10 to 15 km pace so that could be improved substantially. Event comments: The bike factory/jamba juice kailua sprint triathlon was a blast. I will try to do it again next year. For a first, it was well organized, the conditions were pretty good overall for my tastes, and the scenery was terrific. It is Hawaii, what more can i say. I am a lucky guy. Last updated: 2005-03-19 12:00 AM

up at 4 am, shower, eating smothie by 4:20, coffee latte, checked my equipment and gear again, left for the race at 5 am. it was just across the road from where i was staying so it only took me two minutes to arrive
checked in, got my 105 number markered on, set my bike on the rack midway between the enterance from the swim and the exit to the run. laid out my shoes, towel, glasses, water, gloves, hr monitor, running shoes, hat, and race belt with number attached. kept warm by doing some light jogging, high knees, etc, also kept long sleeve shirt on, the wind was strong so it was quite cool before the swim event.
