That's right! MARCH is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month....

Colorectal cancer is the cancer nobody likes to talk about... but it's time to change that!

DID YOU KNOW...

* Colorectal Cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the US

* Colorectal Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US

* Colorectal cancer affects both men and women

* It's estimated that approximately 33% of colorectal cancer deaths could be avoided if people at high risk recieved regular screening tests

WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED?

Men AND Women 50 & Older Approximately 75% of colorectal cancer cases occur in men and women over the age of 50 with no family history, and no other known risk factors. Early, routine screening can catch colorectal cancer while it is still treatable.

Individuals with Known Risk Factors These include individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer OR non-cancerous colon polyps; individuals with irritable bowel disease (Crohn's or Colitis), those with genetic syndromes including familial adenomatous polyposis or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer.

Individuals with symptoms including rectal bleeding, abdominal discomfort, pain, bloating, change in bowel habits, or unexplained anemia or weight loss.

If you fall into any of these categories, I urger you to talk to your doctor about getting screened! Honestly, it's not so bad.... and better than the alternative....

I guess I need to schedule that colonoscopy...

I remember just a few years ago, it just happened to fall on Valentine's day. Yeah, that was fun...
