Just bitching... there's a YMCA right across the street from my apartment, but there's always at least 5 or more people per lane. This bugs me because I'm too fast for the "Medium" lane (I'm often on somebody's heels when I'm doing the breast stroke), and too slow for the "Fast" lane (keeping pace tires me out too quickly). So since I can't really train properly there, I end up travelling 60min or so (return) to go to the Olympic Stadium where I can almost always get half a lane to myself.

Is there a stigma against the slow lane? I went to the YMCA today and I was faster on a kick board then one guy swimming freestyle.

I hear ya. The lanes at my college pool are clearly marked SLOW MEDIUM and FAST. I ususally always go in the fast lane, because I am swimming continously with flip turns. Im usually in the lane with a bunch of college swimmers doing makeup practice laps, and I can keep up with their pace. But sometimes I get some jackass who thinks he is "All that" and cant swim to save him who wont let me pass him (they swim in the middle of the lane rather than keep to the right) and crowds the ends so I cant do flip turns. I usually kindly remind them to keep the ends clear and let the faster people pass, but once the guy went off on me saying it was a "Public Pool and I will swim howerver dammed slow I want". Im usually coruteous in the pool but some people have no sense of ettiqute.
