Subject: Open water swim practice in Concord area?
Does anyone do, or would like to start, open water swim practice somewhere in the Concord area?  I have no swim training at all and know I need to get a lot of work done on my swimming before Black Fly Tri (I may also find one earlier to do).  This is my first year diving into tri's.  I was a competitive cyclist (road, mtn, cross) for 15 years and can handle the running part too, but want as much free help with the swim as I can possibly get.  I know it is probably still a little bit away until we can get in open water, but would like to set something up so I can plan a training schedule around my family commitments.

I'd get into a pool for starters and get your swim technique and base down before you hop into the open water.

The only pools around here with lanes are at health clubs with specific hours for open swim training.  Open Water is typically free and less crowded, plus I really have a hard time working out inside and prefer to be outside if at all possible.  I am only doing sprint length events this year and just need to get the feel for actually swimming in a race type environment.  If I like tri's, which I hope I do, I will be getting into a pool next winter.

Clough State Park in Weare NH.  Thats where the Concord and Manchester YMCA's hold their triathlon in September.  Not far from the Route 9 and 89 merge

A bunch of us get together at Concord YMCA on Saturday at 6:30 AM for swim, until the water gets warmer. Stop by, we'd love to have you.

I just found this, but Glenn Lake in Goffstown looks like a good place to swim. That's my plan when it warms up. I'm tired of paying the Y $60 a month to swim in their chlorine.

I'm new to Triathlons and swimming for distance too. Glenn seems like a good place to not drown anyways. :-)

I know a couple guys that swim at Glen.  If I still lived down that way I would probably go there, but there has to be something in the Concord area for me that is much closer.

Hello:

I work for the City of Concord.. Unfortunalty there are not many good open spots to swim.. Penacook Lake doesn't allow people in it (Water Supply for City). Little and Turkey ponds are probably your best options although the best access to them is in St Paul’s. Turtle pond and Snow pond are also options just watch out for the snapping turtles... The river is always a good option in the summer.. Swimming against the current good work.... but hard to guage distance. Horseshoe pond area has less current good spot out behind NHTI.

I was thinking of jumping in at St. Pauls once it gets warmer.  You can also get in off of the bike path if  you don't feel comfortable going in on St. Pauls property.

I found a nice place on the Jim Hill River loop that I think will work for Xterra training.  It provides a nice river section with trails all around it.  Hopefully that is something that can work.

If you take Bog Rd to Runnells Rd it is down on the right.  There are trails that go in just past the canoe/kayak rental place on Bog Rd that will pop you out onto Runnells Rd. and then you go down Runnells and the next set of trails is about 1/3 of a mile down the road.  Those will take you over to the new snowmobile trail that crosses the river and brings you over to Mast Yard State Forest.
