Pre-race routine:

Saturday was a warm up ride of the course. It shaped up as being a very boring course. Straight as an arrow with a few minor undulations along the way. One lap of 40ks. Then we had a swim down at Eastern beach Saturday afternoon. I went in without the wetsuit and after 30 secs or so it was sweet. I was contemplating not waering the suit as i feel more at home without it on. As Sunday morning was quite cool i decided to wear it.

Event warmup:

Sunday morning it was up at 5:20 for a 20 minute jog, it felt good. A lot better than i had felt the two weeks before this race where i had been struggling with fatigue and headaches and generally been really flat.

Breakfast was a couple of weetbix and then rolled down on the bike to Transition about 6:45am. With pre-numbered bike racks i knew my spot would be waiting for me and that i wouldn't have to fight for a spot. So i left it as late as possible, which was good as it was quite brisk.
Swim
  • 25m 23s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not a great swim by my own standards. I felt slow and sluggish and felt like i was on my own for great periods of time. I tried a few times to unsuccessfully pick up the pace but really started to struggle when i got moving. A disappointing swim which was about 2:30-3mins of my normal time. I suspect this included my transition time though.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Tranistion was ok. Suit Came off quite quickly which was great. The course wasn't flat for long before a short rise so i was outside of my shoes for quite a while. Didn't slow me down to much but was almost 1500m before i was all shoed and riding fully.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 39s
  • 40 kms
  • 33.50 km/hr
Comments:

This hurt. About 25ks i really started to struggle and just fell in a hole and had no energy. It was tough to get the legs turning over and punching into a pretty tough headwind certainly didn't help. I was "this close" to getting off the bike and pulling the pin on the day's events. I struggled back into T1 and was glad to be off the bike. I got to the bike rack and decided that i'll go for a run and see what happens. But i was feeling real ordinary.

Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Pretty standard Transition to the run.
Run
  • 47m 33s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

I wasn't expecting much and set out on the run and probably because i didn't expect much found myself running quite comfortably and without too much effort. So i concentrated on not over striding which i have a tendance to do and keeping my leg cadence high. I remember thinking 9ks till the end of the season, 8ks till the end of the season, etc as i past the k markers. In the end the oficial results timed me at 47:33 but i suspect this included my T2 time as i timed myself at 46:30. Either time was my fastest run split for the season and i suppose ample reward for my perserverance. It was also the first time ever my age group run place was higher than my bike! A first for everything.
Post race
Warm down:

Stood around waiting for my sister to finish. It was her first big Australian National Series Race and she was an excited finisher in 2:47ish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact i had been really low on energy for the proceeding 2 weeks.

However on Tuesday after the race the results from a blood test i had done showed i have been suffering from Glandular Fever, which would explain everything. Still a disappointing end to the season.

Next Race: Vancouver Triathlon. 5 September 2005. Vancouver, British Columbia.

Event comments:

Yay for off season. Bring on the football.

Hey Aaron. What a supreme effort for being under the weather. [Actually I'd be stoked if they were my times under top conditions!]. And a PB in there too. Way to go. You just go from strength to strength. Enjoy your down time. Take care. Susan.
