Subject: Clumsy running?
Disclaimer - I am not a big runner....

I live in the city and not all the sidewalks are very good to run on (lots of cracks). I'm not near many trails (even though these are better I know). I see other people running around in my neighborhood just fine, but when I run outside, I am extremely clumsy. I trip and fall or go flying. I mostly run on a treadmill, just because it's a better workout for me that running outside.

Am I a dangerous person or does this wear off with practice? Is anyone else "clumsy?"

I'd be clumsy outside, too, if I did most of my runs on a treadmill. Get outside more.

Now, I'm not an expert runner... I come from a swim background with no running experience. I couple years ago, when I started dabbling in sprint tris following the birth of my 1st daughter I was strictly a treadmill girl. I live in the snowy NE and the awkward running on the treadmill got me started. When it got nice and I tried to transition to the outside world, I felt like a clumsy oaf.

A couple years later, I now make a point of running outside whenever possible - even in the winter. Mentally and physically I feel better. I still have horrible running form (according to my husband who is a "runnner") and I still go at a turtle's pace, but I am SO much more comfortable on the road. A lot of my running is on suburban/rural roads that have a lot of bumps, ditches and other catastrophes to avoid. I can find my own rhythm and not the one that the treadmill wants me to go at. In fact, when I do have to resort to the treadmill THAT's when I now feel awkward and can't find "my groove".

To make a long story short... I definitely agree with running more outside!

x4 with the "get outside more" -- I live in a city where the sidewalks are more like post-apocalyptic reminders of what sidewalks used to be -- random cracks, tree roots, shards of broken brick and slate coming up at weird angles.  When I started running, I was so slow and clumsy on the sidewalks.  I would always stub my toe or twist my ankle.  Now I feel so much better running outside, and I actually really enjoy the "challenge" of adjusting for the weird conditions.  It has really helped with my time in running races, too -- my 10k last weekend was partially trail running.  My husband doesn't run outside as much as I do, and he really struggled on the trail segment.  I had an awesome time and passed a whole bunch of people (and I didn't see them later, either.)
