Subject: GPS Tracking

What I would really like to do is find something (software for my phone or a gadget) that will allow my wife to be able to locate me when I'm running or on a ride.  I do most of my workouts alone so safety is a bit of an issue and I know it would ease her mind if she could hop on the computer, pull up a website and see my 'dot' moving.

Does anyone have any experience with anything that they'd recommend?  MayMyTracks is the only thing that I've found so far that seem to do what I want, but I was hoping to get some more information before installing it on my phone.

Thanks.

Trakkers GPS is a company that is in the process of beta testing a device like this.  I am sponsored by them and hope to try out a device before the year is out.  From my understanding, once completed, the device will be able to do exactly as you mentioned.  I don't know what the price of the unit will be or how much the monthly service fee will be, but from what I have heard it sounds like a pretty good device (would be worn on your wrist much like the garmin forerunners).  Their website is trakkersgps.com, but I don't think they have any info up yet.  If you would like more info on it, there is an email address at the bottom of the website.

If you've got an Iphone then check out InstaMapper. There is also a stand-alone compatible phone that's pay-as-you go that works with this. I've used both and they work great. Both upload your position to a website which can then be viewed by anyone given access. There are other similar applications for other smartphones, but I've only tested this one as it did what I needed.

I had originally used the app for automobile tracking when I upgraded from an APRS HAM radio setup doing the same thing. I've got it tied into my home automation system so the family can check 'where's Todd?'. When I purchased an Iphone earlier this year I was going to write an app that sent my position to the server and duplicate the functionality. Found a few similar programs so saved me the time. Then I thought it'd be nice to have along during longer bike rides so the family could check up one me if needed.

Also, there have been several commercial units put out recently (or was scheduled at least) that performed this same functionality. However, the units are expensive and they have a high monthly service fee as it uses the cellular network for sending data. I noticed they rent this at the IM races. I think apps such as the one on the Iphone will kill any prospect of the success for this device.

This is what you are looking for: http://www.findmespot.com/en/

I have been thinking about getting one myself for long rides.  It needs to see the sky, so you would probably need to stick it in one of your jersey pockets on your back, but it is pretty lightweight and I don't think it would bother you.  They have different subscription levels and I think for what you want, you will need the 'Tracking' upgrade that costs $50 per year on top of the $100 for the basic service.

ETA: Just noticed 'Joe h' already gave you the website...

Latitude looks like it'll be good, but last time I checked it wasn't released to the public yet (edit: just checked and it's the Iphone/touch that STILL isn't released. Sometimes these guys pick a strange target market for initial deployment. Why chose the Android & Windows Mobile 5.0 over the Iphone??

The problem with devices like Findmestop are the monthly service fees. Especially if you've already got a phone that supports applications and has a gps built in.

I'm going to test Latitude on my way home today to see how well it tracks (it is public now), then I just have to figure out the best way to carry my cell phone with me that won't be a pain or damage it.

I keep mine in the bento box during rides. Don't usually carry it during runs unless I'm going on a long desert run off the main roads.
