I'm doing a lot of internet research on weight loss. The strange thing is that the more that I read, the more questions I have.

The thing that I seem to find the most is that most of the stuff I read seems to target people who don't do anything. In other words, it all says that you have to get out and exercise - go for a walk!

Well, obviously getting out and exercising isn't my problem. Does anybody know of any good reading that caters to active people's weight loss? i.e. sport nutrition?

What are you weight loss goals?  Are you looking to drop 5 lbs, or 20 lbs?  Is diet the main thing with which you struggle?

It's funny how dieting means something different to us than to the rest of the world.  There's such a high rate of obesity in this country.  Sure, if you're living on a steady diet of fast food and TV, the advice is easy--go for a walk, eat some fruits and veggies and skip the McD's!  It's not that simple for the rest of us.

A great book is "Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes" by Monique Ryan.

Well, lots actually... I'm tipping the scales at about 228-230 right now. I'd love to get to at most 180 or so. I'm by no means "fat" at 5'11", most people can't believe I weigh that much but I do! I'd like to lose a lot of weight, but am really confused about how much I should eat while working out at such an increased frequency. I'm about to start training for an International distance race in October, so I'll need all the energy I can get, but really want to slim down as much as possible.

Well, I looked at that, but most of the books I find seem to be geared toward established triathletes that are looking for optimimum energy through nutrition. While I'm looking for that too, I want one that is geared toward losing weight.

You sound like you are in the exact same boat as I am - 230 wanting to get down to 180 or so.  I have read almost everyting out there and the problem is you need to find what works for you.  For example - I know people that the only way they will lose weight is if they plan out every meal in advance and therefore know exactly what is going into their body.  I also knew a guy who ate the exact same thing 6 days a week (oatmeal and protein in the morning - tuna at lunch - chicken at night) He was in great shape but would not budge from the menu.

I think a good place for you to start is a website called coreperformance.com - Sign up for the free 1 week trial and it will allow you to pick your goals (including weight loss) It will come up with a very basic nutrition plan for you based on a 40-30-30 plan.  I have found it is a good place to start and it also shows the number of calories you should be taking in for your goals and exercise level.   Try it and see what you think.

I just looked at your logs and your run and bike are about the same as mine- I notced that you put the calories afer your exercises.  The calories - especially for your biking - seem to be high.  I don' tknow where you are getting the numbrs from but you need to be careful about the accuracy of your calorie expenditures. A lot of people tend to over estimate the number burned as well as underestimate the amount they take in during the day. (  I just stop counting after I hit 1800 calories - however this does not seem to be working out well for me)

I should probably stop putting that on there. I just put them in there because the Garmin gives them to me. I really don't keep track, I just like the metrics. Anyway, I'll definitely check out that website - I greatly appreciate the tip.

I have found the nutrition articles on stumptuous.com (a website devoted to women's strength training) to be really helpful in creating a eating plan that actually allows me to lose weight while becoming more physically fit.  Caveat: Since Krista is a powerlifter and not an endurance athlete, she will recommend way less carbs than someone doing crazy endurance training should, IMO, be eating.  But she does a very good job of explaining which foods are to be embraced, which foods are to be avoided, and why.
