I will be staying in Viriginia Beach (8 blocks from the beach at the Doubletree on 1900 Pavillion Drive) this weekend and Williamsburg (location not determined) next week. I'm interested in routes to ride my bike that have as little traffic as possible.

Thanks.

Gary

in williamsburg, look up the patriot olympic/halfiron courses (depending on how long you want to go!)  super flat and pretty views, low traffic.  (greensprings road, rt. 5 away from the burg)

in va beach, look up fort story - i hear there is nice biking there and also low traffic.

Also, you can use the Capital to Capital Trail from Williamsburg to the Chickahominy River...it is a wide path and on the section along Rt. 5 to the river you can go all out.  Not many people on it over on that section...as opposed to the beginning of the trail adjacent to Greensprings Road.

If that ride is not long enough for you...let me know and I'll post a ride using the map system here that you could print out.  Just let me know the mileage you are looking for.

They have a group ride on Satuday. Different paces. The A group has a 20 and 30 miler. About 15 minute from your hotel.

Call them up. 757-427-9488

ETA: Its going to be July 4th weekend. It will be crazy at the beach. Packed with tourists and such. Take your bike far away as possible from the oceanfront.

A big +1 on the Fat Frogs group rides. A+, A, B & C pace groups - B&C paces are No one  dropped rides. 21 miles is the norm. Some folks will "ride to the store" in Creeds (32 miles.)   Little traffic, few stop signs. This is one of my favorite routes. Leaves 7:30 am sharp from "Fat Frogs" bike shop in Red Mill Commons Shopping Center just a short drive (6-7 miles) from your hotel (or you could ride it but expect traffic near the oceanfront.)

If you start at Jamestown (they have a big parking lot)...and ride the Capital Trail to the river, it is like 7 miles each way.  Aside from 3 or 4 streets that cross it, you can ride worry free of cars.  However, you do need to be careful at those few intersections, a buddy of mine got hit last week because there is a huge bush at one of those intersections and neither the car or cyclist could see one another.  Rider and bike were fine except for a flat tube.  That would be the easiest ride by directions.  Obviously you'd need to do the round trip twice to get the mileage you are looking for.

To add 5 miles, on the way back, turn into Governor's Land at Two Rivers.  It is a public access to very upscale private housing and a ritzy country club.  If you go in the subdivision, pass the guard shack and hang a right, use that road all the way to the golf course, and come back.  That is just about 5 miles.  Wide roads and only 35mph for cars so no worries.  Gorgeous views.

Both rides almost pancake flat.  There is only one hill coming back up from the golf course.  Everything else between the two rides is flat, not even rollers.

I just put a new biking route into the Routes system.  Location is Williamsburg.  Name is Jamestown to Chickahominy.  13.6 miles out and back.  For the Governor's Land option that I mentioned above...if you look at the map, as you approach the river, the land subdivision on the left is what I was referring to.  You can see that you turn in, take a right, and go all the way to the river.

I may venture up there for a change of pace... looks like a nice ride!

Has some good Williamsburg routes. The Williamsburg Shop Ride is a great ride if you are looking for a few more hills and a few more miles. Less traffic than route 5 too.

I only ride on the path on Route 5 (except in Charles City), the roads are too narrow to be safe.  Especially since the shade hides riders from cars.

Also, if you decide to do the Bike Beat Shop Ride on Wednesday evenings...good luck.  That is A++ until everyone is dropped.  That and within the past 2 months, Bike Beat has had 3 crashes.

I rode the Virginia Beach and Williamsburg routes last week and was very pleased. The Fat Frogs route in Virginia Beach is awesome. I wish I had a route that flat at home. Almost no traffic. I was going along well, really nice pace, until I had to turn around and then bam, the wind was in my face the whole way back.

In the Williamsburg area, I rode the the Jamestown to Chickohominy River route, with the added detour into Governor's Land. Nice mostly flat route on a wide bike path.

Thanks!
