Polar RS400 and trouble connecting to PC

Hey!  I have a Polar RS400 (no footpod, just the HR monitor) and am trying to connect to my pc.  I have the infrared device thing and have downloaded the Polar ProTrainer software.  The red light at the end of the IR device is flashing, but on the protrainer software it's just saying "Connecting to Polar product".  That's it and nothing is happening.  It seems that since the red light is flashing on the IR device that it's connected on the PC end, but no information is being transmitted from the watch.  I've also hit the "Connect" button on the watch, but it times out it seems and goes back to the time and date "homepage" if you will.  Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong.  I'm finding absolutely no instruction on the rs400 user guide.  Not sure where else I should look.
