I did it last year when it was still a 5430 Sports race. It was my first too. I really liked it. The weather was perfect (58-60 degrees, slight clouds) and the bike is pretty flat. Same with the run. And it is BEE-YOO-TI-FUL! I'll bet it will be even prettier this year with all the rain we've had. The lake was a good temp (maybe 65-66? can't remember) but there is a lot of plant life growing in there! The RD said during the pre-race mtg that if you're tired during the last 100meters on the swim, you can just grab the seaweed and pull yourself along, and it's true! But even though I have a very low "ick" threshold, it didn't bother me once we started. If you have time the day before or the evening after the race, you should go to Strawberry Hot Springs. It was the perfect way to relax before the race.

I did it last year as well. It's a beautiful course, but the water is very plant-y. I kind of liked it because you could see the algae moving by you and it made you feel like you were going faster. Or maybe that's just me because I'm a slow swimmer.

The bike course is all uphill on the way back, but it was very scenic and nice.

Run course I crashed and had to walk a chunk of it, but it's pretty flat from what I remember.

I had a great time. It was a great race.

Yes- I had a sleeveless wetsuit (because I found it on clearance for $14), but would have preferred a full wetsuit. One of my friends had one of those "shorties" and was fine, another friend had a full wetsuit, and one didn't have a wetsuit at all, but he dropped out because the water was too cold. (I warned him!)

You'll want a wetsuit. You can rent one for not too much (my friend's shorty suit was from a scuba shop for $6, I think, but it wasn't the same material as everyone else's)
