Subject: sprint workouts???
hello,

just finished my first sprint... read somewhere that doing sprints is important to increasing speed. Just wondering what are some good sprint workouts? ive never done them before and wondered whats a good way to go about doing them

currently planning to run 3x a week. 1 longer run (easy pace), 1 sprint workout, and 1 run with some hills. does this sound about right?

thanks in advance for your responce!

personally, that sounds like a very quick way to get hurt.

in the distances we race (5k and up), what you are looking to do right now is bring overall run paces down, not build the ability to sprint. you will do that by running more, consistently. the more you run, over time, the faster your running will get.

util you are up in the 20-30mpw range, running harder is not going to get you a lot of anywhere other than hurt.

you would be better served by running one more day a week and cutting out the harder stuff, it will be much easier on your body and get another few miles of running in the program.

When you say sprints, do you mean Interval Training?  If so, check out FIRST.  Furman Institute.  I do their Marathon program and they have some good interval workouts.  Google them.

Maybe the cat means speed rather than sprint work. I do one speed workout a week. The group I run with always does in between 2-3 miles of speed work. Here is what this week looked like.
1.5 mile warm up
600 meters speed 200 meters recovery (repeat six times)
1.5 mile cool down

We typically run 300's, 400's, 600's, 800', and the occasional 1200 and 1600.

I wouldn't recomend doing anything below a 200.

An amazing coach I have used who went to the Olympics in Beijing with the UK team recommended a plan that each week included:

1 x steady pace long distance
1 x interval training (speed or gradient play)
1 x technique session (transition included)
1 x plyometrics (similar to circuit training, but focusing on your legs to increase strength- ie tuck jumps, lunges, squats, burpees etc)

I wouldn't try plyometrics unless its part of a personally designed program or with your regular club as you can injure yourself quite easily- the temptation to do more than you can is high, and its the delayed muscle onset soreness that gets you a couple of days after!

For the interval training you are aiming to practice "Fartlek" or speed play. If you have access to a track then it helps but if not don't worry about it- the whole point is that you are teaching your body to cope with random increases in speed, and then to sustain these increases.

As long as you are warming up correctly with dynamic stretching (no held stretches prior to training!!) then this will help with injury pevention.

Remember to always include some backward running after your training. Creating an imbalance of muscle build anywhere in the body is the cause of most injuries (especially hamstrings etc) so you need to counter all the work you are doing with the muscles that propel you forward, with the opposite side

As with all things, there are many schools of thought on different ways to train- you have to try and find out what's best for you. Running up hills may make some people faster and in others it may build too much heavy muscle and slow them down...

good luck

the issue with adding any type of speedwork is two fold,

first, if the OP doesnt have the running under his belt to safely do ith, he is goingto get hurt, and at this point the gains from doign speedwork are going to be about the same as simply running.

second, most people i see simply do not get how to do track or speed workouts correctly. they see 400m repeats, so they go SPRINT 400m, or something to that effect.

speedwork, with the exception of strides (if you want to call that speed work), really has no place in the training program of someone not running a lot or for a long time.

ok so maybe the article i read said speed work and not sprints... and if i am understanding you correctly that i dont worry about it till ive got more milage under my belt. now im doing about 9-10 a week. Im not sure what you mean by intervals. does that mean i run faster-then slower, over and over again? So what would you do if you were me in a typical week?
thanks!
