Subject: Swim lessons

Hi all

I'm new here and new to this whole triathlon addiction and I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas on where I could take adult swim lessons.  I live in Southgate but I am willing to drive some distance if the time works with my schedule.  I just did my first tri which had a 400 meter swim and I was soooo ssslllooowww.  I have only been swimming for about 2 months and I feel like I am using all this energy in the water and getting nowhere!  I really could use some formal training on breathing and different strokes.

Any info you wonderful experts can give me will be truly appreciated!

Lynda

I'm a Masters swim coach in Ann Arbor, and I do lessons. So there's that.

However, there are lots of Masters teams in the area. You can look them up at www.michiganmasters.com amongst other places. There's sure to be a coach and a team near you.

To get private lessons, simply contact the team and ask the coach for something private.

Otherwise, there's also lots of companies, like Total Immersion,  that are for beginners that do lessons too... but there you get a trademarked package which is a bit different than Masters Swimming.

If you have more Q's, feel free to contact me. Good luck!

Lynda,

Hi!
I belong to the Michigan Masters DRY (Downriver Y) group. We are a group of swimmers of all experience levels. You do not have to be a member of the Michigan Masters team to swim practices with us. We have several experienced "Tri'ers" amongst us as well as some runners just learning to swim. We have several high school, etc coaches amongst us, but I don't believe they do private lessons. What we do have are some very good swimmers that would be willing to help you out with technique, etc.

Our group is very relaxed and we practice at several different locations. Practices at the Southgate YMCA are: Sunday mornings approx 9am, and there is a small group that swims almost every morning beginning around 5:30-6am. Some of our group also swims at the Flat Rock Fitness center. I don't know their schedule, but I could find out for you if you are interested.

During the summer is our "slow period". The swim season and heavy practices start in the fall as our team meets begin the first of the year, leading up to our State Meet in the spring. In fall, we have arrangements with some of the middle & high school pools for additional evening practices.

You should go with that group ^They are close, and that'll help make the practices regular. You don't have to be a member of Michigan Masters to swim with us in Ann Arbor Masters either, but we do have coaching at all practices, and all of us (the coaches) offer swim lessons. i'd go down to Ann Arbor only if you are looking for a private lesson. Your local team is what will create the foundation for your swim fitness, and the Downriver YMCA looks like it could work well for you since you are in southgate. nothing beats swimming with friends.

Hartland High School pool has one.  Bit of a drive from Southgate though.  They don't meet in the summer though.

I am interested in joining this group.  I live in Brownstown/Flat Rock Area.  Do you have to be a member of the southgate Y to join the group?  I have a membership at the flat rock rec center currently and I am unwilling to purchase a membership at the southgate Y as well.  Any additional information you could give about meeting times/places would be greatly appreciated.  Can I just show up to a practice or do I need to talk to someone first?

Thank you,

-Jono

Jono,

Yes, you would need a membership to swim at the Southgate Y. Better that you already have a membership at the Flat Rock facility as I hear it is much cheaper for non-Southgate residents than the Y.

I will try to find out which of our Masters members is swimming at Flat Rock and what their practice schedule is. Again, please keep in mind that summer is our slow season. I know that last fall/winter they were able to obtain some commitments from Flat Rock for some official practice times with dedicated lanes. If that worked out to everyones advantage, it is likely that may continue.

Our unofficial record keeper/secretary/address & message updater is Don. If you would like, I can give him your e-mail address and have him include you in all of our updates. He usually lets us know when we have finalized our fall arrangements with the middle/high schools for evening practices, reminds us about deadlines, sets up special practices, etc.
