Subject: How do you by parts?
I am looking into buying a frame and building from the ground up.  I would like all dura ace/SRAm red, but can not afford.  What is the best part to build around?  ie dura ace crank set etc....  I want to see if I can build a ground up with gently used parts in comparison to a manufactured bike.  pros and cons?

Check out www.GVHbikes.com you can custom order a groupo and save some bucks at least in campy and sram, I think there is some limits to the substitutions on the shimano stuff. For example if you want a sram red rear derailer and think that a rival front is good enough. Or maybe you want to get sram red shifters and want to buy a good used carbon crank or one from nashbar(fsa mega exo). Or do you really need the red cassette or will the force be good enough with red shifters.... I'm sure you get the picture.. They also have some kickin frames for a great deal...
Wish I new about the shop before I bought my bike with its LBS average build.

So looking at the ultegra groupo it would be about 1000 without the wheel set.  This looks like a pretty decent price.  Thanks for the site because this is a good way to look over stuff and have a comparison dollar amount to "site" off of when shopping or at least make a check list.

Check out www.comparisonpricing.com They've got tables of each component and who has it for the lowest price. Be careful though: Out of stock items and shipping charges might work against you.

You should be able to get an Ultegra group for well under $1000. We were noting last week finding some for around $800.

Shop around, use ebay, watch for closeouts, and don't be afraid to piece the group together not all from the same store. I've done this with 3 bikes, and saved over $800 on each compared to buying the group together. Patience really pays off in this instance.

Piece by piece will be best.  Much easier to hide one box at a time from the wife rather than one large one.

I am looking at the planet x frame right now, but my eyes are still open.  I need some measurements and such before geting to deep into this.  I think going this route will be much easier on the pocket book, plus I want to know how to service the bike as well.

I agree with the piece by piece method.  I have outfitted several bikes with Ultegra rear derailleur and Ultegra shift/brake levers with the rest of the components typically being SRAM or FSA.  I have been able to find good prices through the classifieds on this site as well as ebay.  I will note that lightly used does not bother me and I have been able to pick up amazing deals that away.
