Subject: Anyone have this Sleeping problem?
I know this will sound weird but... but I just started training up for my first Triathlon about a month ago, for the past 3 weeks I've had too MUCH energy to fall asleep when I want.  I know this isn't something I shouldn't complain about, but I once read that triathletes should try to get up to 10 hours of sleep each night to have a good successful day of training the next day.  Well I get up to go to work at 6am every morning and I do anywhere from 1 to 2 hours of training a day and you would THINK that would ware me out to the point where I have no problem sleeping, but really it's only given me MORE energy to the point I don't find myself falling asleep till 12-1am... maybe it's my diet change... anyone else have this problem?

Are you training shortly before you go to bed?  Otherwise changing your normal bedtime routine?

If you do heaps of training, getting to bed at 9pm is easy.

Try not to eat a big dinner, or much before bed.

If I train in the evening, I have trouble sleeping but I would have thought before 6 would have given plenty of time for the adrenalin, enodorphins etc to get out of your system.  Do you feel tired during the day?

I frequently have this problem, and the only solution i've found that works consistently (without medication) is taking a nice warm to hot bath before getting into bed. Works without fail, my body gets nice and toasty, and the minute my head hits the pillow i'm out...

hot bath is soooooo lovely, with buckets of good smelling bubble bath.  Hot milk mixed with whisky works a treat!

If I have an exceptionally intense training day, I will usually have trouble getting to sleep that night.  I chaulk it up to "over-reaching".  If my training load is appropriate for my fitness level, I will have no problem sleeping.

I'm there too; if I'm going hard and training lots sometimes I toss and turn a lot too. I never had this problem till recently, when I've increased my volume as part of HIM training. Also, since I'm more of a night person I also find myself rehashing some training, tri, or race strategy as I lay there too, which doesn't help. And then I can't get my butt out of bed in the morning. To catch up, every now and then I'll lay with my little guy to 'help him fall asleep'; meanwhile, it's daddy who is down for the count, not junior...

I have this problem during the winter when my training group swims from 8:30 to 9:30 at night.  I usually cannot settle down to sleep on those nights until close to midnight.  Any other time, sleeping is not a problem.

I only sleep for about 6 hrs a night... and more often than not I'll wake up at about 2AM starving. I do 2 a days and save the majority of my effort for the post work train. A 2k cal dinner still isn't enough.Try working out in the mornings - you'll want to go to bed by 8PM if you do it right

I have this problem if I work out in the afternoon or evening -- like the other night, when I did an easy run at like 8 and couldn't get to bed until 11:30 (I'm supposed to get up at 5).  As long as I get all my training done before about 1 PM, I'm totally exhausted by 9 or so though.

if i slept for 10 hours there is no way i would be able to sleep the next day.

during heavy training i sleep 7-8 hours a night, normally more like 6, and this has me able to train well and still get to sleep.

make sure you're hydrating well; dehydration can stop you sleeping.

You probably don't need 10 hours of sleep, 8 to 9 should probably be just fine. I need to give myself about 20 minutes of laying in bed and reading or watching TV before it's lights out and I attempt to go to sleep. If I don't give myself that unwind time, I have a lot of trouble falling asleep. I think a lot of it is because it's go go go all day long...train, get ready for work, go to work, work, drive home, train, cook, eat, pack for next day, bed.

I can never sleep more than three hours on a day off, and have trouble sleeping during recovery weeks, when my training volume comes down. I don't have any tricks for more sleep I just try and get as much as I can, and stay up as long as possible after, so I can sleep the next night.
