Subject: My 500 meter time...good...too slow...I have no idea
I have been training for this upcoming tri on Aug. 9th and have been swimming everyday, the first week I stuck to doing 250 meters and now I am up to 500 meters.  I keep seeing these fast times for 500 to 1000 meters and so I decided to time myself today and I am swimming 500 meters in a little over 10 minutes.  So, my question is, Is this good...bad....slow....where I need to be....work on getting it alot faster?  I have no idea, I am training for this thing and I literally have no ideas of any of the times I need to be getting to.
Any help is appreciated.  And even if this is slower than molasses I am still loving this training.

thanks

Jason

as long as you are happy and keep improving  then time doesnt' matter,

whats fast to some is slow to others... just keep enjoying your training

and congrats so far

is it 500m or yards? (yards will be a bit faster).

for what its worth, when i started swimming 4 years ago, my first 500 that i tested myself (in yards, not meters) was 13:xx.

after a lot of hard work that time has come down a LOT

The great thing about Tri's is if your time is slower in one, you still have two additional events to bounce back. My strong suite is the swim portion, I'm average on the bike, and suck on the run... That being said, I have tracked my times over the last year and they have all dropped with hard training.

Set some goals and I'm sure you can get down to them.... As for what I consider FAST - most 500 meter / yard swims are open water swims and range from 6:30 - 8:00.

Look at the previous year's results for a tri near you.  Then you can compare your swim time to the times posted.  For what it is worth...I am a newbie, but consider myself a decent swimmer and that is about my time too.

mainly through hard work and a decent amount of time in the pool i have got my 500yrd time from where i started in the 13 min range to 5:54 for my best.

lot of time spent swimming, and working on tech has helped a LOT, this puts me at the front of sprint races, but in longer events i get dropped back a bit still.

its possible to come from a pretty slow start, work at it, and progress quickly, even more so at first if you put in the owrk and are doing it correctly.

Just keep in mind that open water swim distances are often (usually...) not quite as exact as pool distances...

FWIW, 10-ish minutes puts you at just over 2:00/100, which is a pretty solid MOP swim pace, from my experience. You won't be the first one out of the water, but you certainly won't be the last, either.

The races I have seen will have people at 5-6 minutes for the fastest, and up to 20 min for the slowest. You will be in good shape with a time of 10-12 minutes. Remember, though don't kill yourself in the swim as you still have the bike and run to come.

Thanks everyone, and I agree about starting out too fast, this used to happen to me in 5k's, I would shoot out real quick and end up burning out, this is something I surely need to work on.
Once again everyone has been helpful.
