Have recently had several flats and finally found the culprit.  A tiny wire finally worked itself far enough through the tire for me to find it.  Now, there is quite a gash in the tire.  Do I need to replace it?

Helmets and tires are safety issues, and I would not bother with the little cost of replacing that tire (or a "used" helmet), as medical costs are way more than that little bit of equipment.

That said, I've seen people vulcanize a patch on the inside of the tire to temporarily "fix" the gash, but it's definetly not worth the risks for long time use. I've used a folded dollar bill to "reinforce" a gash on a ride to get me home. Nothing is worth it long term.
