Is anyone familiar with the elevation around Sandusky, Ohio. I am looking at the Rev3 Cedar Point Ironman for 2010 and coming from Florida am a little concerned about hills. The website has not posted the bike route yet. This venue seems like a great way for the family to enjoy a long day. Thanks...Jason

Thanks...I guess what I'm really looking for is elevation change in the area or how hilly the bike course may be.

Looking at the map above it looks like Sandusky is north enough to still be on the 'flatter' portion left by glacial movment, so without much first-hand knowledge of the area (sorry) it looks like the ride would probably be relatively flat...that being said, it would all depend on the route.

I grew up just west of Sandusky in Toledo. That part of Ohio is pretty flat. Growing up I thought freeway overpasses were hills and I marveled that I could hit 30mph on a descent if I pedaled as hard as I could down one. As you approach Cleveland and/or get away from the lake you can get some rolling hills as you cross over the many streams/rivers that flow into the lake.

For an idea look at the MS 150 day 1 ride. Max grade appears to be 2% with only 500 feet of climbing over 75 miles. I'd say unless the course designers go out of their way to find hills you'll be flat.

Edit: Found another good one. 56 mile bike tour of Erie County. 548 feet of climbing over 56 miles. I'd say you're safe.

This area is fairly flat, with the biggest hills being the overpasses to the highways for the most part.

Wow. Just, um, wow.

My ultra-flat run route, for when I'm feeling lazy, is a little over 200' gain. In a mile and a half. And really, it is flat, I'm not just sayin' it.

Yeah, even Florida is that flat. I thought I remembered Sandusky being a bit more rolling that that, but I guess not!

"Flat" obviously has different meanings to us mountain-folk but a 200' gain over 1.5 miles is a 2.5% grade. That is about the same average pitch as:

Summit High School to Vail Pass Summit
-----------------------------------------------
15.34 miles, 2221' climbing. 2.75% average grade.
Summit High to Frisco West:

Frisco West to Vail Pass:

I've taken a lot of bike riders on this climb and I promise you that NOBODY would consider it "flat" and especially not "ultra-flat".
