Member  52  Fort Wayne, IN |  Subject: Tri IndySo I'm in for Tri Indy. Just wondering for those who did it last year or are doing it this year, are you going with a wetsuit in the canal? I think I read somewhere that it's in the mid 70's. I don't have a wetsuit and I'm trying to decide if I should grab one before the race. Thanks! |

Member 49 Indianapolis, Indiana | Subject: RE: Tri Indy From last year's experience, I so no one with a wetsuit. It was a little chilly wading in , but that's all. The canal swim was really fun as there was little need for sighting. I just stayed the same distance from the wall the entire time. One thing you can do beforehand is walk the route and make a mental note of landmarks (store shops, bridges, etc) of where you make need to take a peek. Then you can treat it much like swimming in the pool until you spot those landmarks. Best swim i have had because I never veered off course. Last year I completed the Olympic distance, but this year i am only doing the Sprint. Hope to see you there |

Expert 655  Muncie, IN | Subject: RE: Tri Indy It was wetsuit legal last year. I wore mine but didn't really need it. I'm a poor swimmer and always wear mine if it's legal. Like the other person said there's really no need for extensive sighting. I would race it again but this year I'm competing at the Duathlon in the MERCRS Championships that same weekend. |

I did have a sore throat for a few days after and someone said that it was probably from the green algae in the water. It won't hurt you, they say, but it does cause sore throats for some. It is fun and if you have any fans with you, they can walk along the canal and cheer you on with every other breath if you are a bi-lateral breather! |

Thinking about doing it this year as my 1st Oly (after doing 2 sprints earlier this year). Did you think wetsuit was needed for the swim, or was water warm enough? I e-mailed to organizer & was told canal's water temp tends to follow air temp more than local lake temps would. So it will be difficult to predict until week of race. His best guess was about 80 degrees. I'm leaning towards not renting wet suit as I find my local heated pool's 82 degrees a bit too warm for long workouts. And I've never swam in a wetsuit before. Figure I'd rather be slow & cool in my 1st Oly swim than too warm & a bit dehydrated. |

The canal is only about 4 foot deep. If you feel a bit of panic or feel like you need a break you can move off to the side and put your feet down for a second. The wave starts are also pretty small - you won't have to battle with hundreds of folks for open space. Other than the icky water, it really is a nice race for a newer swimmer. |

| 2 | Subject: RE: Tri Indy For those of you who swam in the canal in 2008 the water then was "clearer" than in Eagle Creek..cleaner is left up to lab tests to decided but visibility was better. I haven't had chance to check it out this year but imagine it's marginally better. I'm normally more comfortable in cold water than most but I kinda wish I had my wetsuit in 2008 but was fine without it. I'll probably where one this year if the water is below 75 if for nothing else to get more practice swimming in one for distance. Personally I had no stomach issues as one person mentioned but I could see how some could be irritated if you swallowed lots of water :( Anyone have any feedback this year on the quality of the canal water ? |

After talking with some guys at local well-respected running/tri shop who did event last year, decided to take their advice & skip the wetsuit. FWIW- I felt fine at Eagle Creek OWS last month (air temp 59/water temp 76). |

And of course the sludge gets kicked up and churned around by all the athletes in the water so you'll end up swimming thru some of it. In all honesty, I didn't really notice it except when waiting for my wave to start. Once I got the go it was swim, swim, swim. Water quality didn't enter my head even once! |

Coming from Louisville, staying on the south side will save you some driving time. Getting into downtown from, say, Southport Rd. isn't more than 10 or 15 minutes on a Sunday morning. I think I'll be staying in the Castleton/N. Keystone area (NE Indy), just because I used to live up that direction.
