Subject: First Time Olympic Queires
Hi There, my name is Natt, I'm 38 and I'm training for my first tri. I've been training now for 1 month and have 6 weeks to go until race day. I would really love some advice on a couple of things, firstly I need some advice on my swimming. I live in Switzerland and all I have available for swim training is a quarry which is pretty awsum as its 250m across, so I've been working up to 6 lengths non stop, which from this week onwards I'll be doing 4 times a week, however it's no good for the reps that all of the training plans I've seen suggest I do. Is it ok to just knock out distance and to try to keep pushing it faster? Also, I was quite pleased at my 38 minute time until a friend pointed out that an average time is about 25 minutes so I now have images of clambering out of the swim 10 minutes after everyone else which has worried me some. and Lastly on some of my training days I'm doing two things, ie runnig and swimming etc, should I be combing these as though in a race or is it ok to be doing one in the morning and another in the afternoon.
Many Thanks in advance, love the site and loving Triathlon... also loving the 12lbs I've lost in 4 weeks.
Natt

the quarry rocks (no pun intended). As you are just starting out dont sweat the intervals and that work. Just do the distance. If you feel like it you could do one length hard, then one easy etc but probably ok to just swim it for now, even increase the distance to 8 lengths or more just to be sure. It is perfectly fine to swim at one time and then later during the day go for a run or a bike, or whatever times work for you. Nothing says you have to do one then the other every time though it might be good to practice a bike then a run a few times (called a brick) just so you know what it feels like to "run off the bike". Also dont worry about the swim times for yourself. If you swim it in 38 minutes that is no problem as long as they dont have a swim cut off at 37:59 or something like that. You will probably not be the last one out of the water either but even if you are, you are still doing better than all the people who did not even toe the line.

Good luck, dont sweat it to hard, and overall have fun!

Don't worry about the times too much. There will be some that are faster, some that are slower.

You'll get a lot of different opinions on training sessions back to back (Also known as bricks). I would suggest you do some back to back to get a feel for what it's like, and then separate the other sessions so that you can go harder and have some recovery time in between.
