Subject: Altering a wetsuit?
Is it possible to alter a wetsuit without ruining it?

Specifically, since they all seem to have mock-turtleneck cuts, I'm wondering if I could have one cut down to more of a crew or (ideally) v-neck...and not have it rip apart or have the lining unravel.

And where would you have that done, if it is in fact possible?  I'm thinking probably not the guy who hems my jeans!?!?

I can't speak for altering tri wetsuits, but I once had a scuba suit altered. I went to a dive shop. They had someone who worked specifically with neoprene. I certainly wouldn't go to a regular tailor.

I don't think you'd get a good seal and it would end up scooping up water like you are towing a parachute.  There is a very good reason they fit tightly around the neck like they do.

On a similar vein, my wetsuit is a hair too long in the legs. It would be great if I could chop off 1". I heard that's not a problem. Anything to watch out for if I go for it?

Because I have this weird phobia about having things tight around my neck...even low around my neck like the "low-profile" wetsuits.

No matter how well a wetsuit fits me or how high-end of a suit I get, I'll be constantly tugging at the neck and obsessing about feeling it pressing on the front of my neck.

It is seriously weird, if anyone touches the front of my neck (anywhere from the hollow at the base up to around/above my voicebox area), I freak out.

Edit:  If it fits, it will be snug across the top, wherever the top falls, right?  I'm not talking about a deep v-neck like a bikini top, just something that comes to the very top of my breastbone, maybe two inches below the hollow of my throat.
