Jeeesh! What kind of lunacy is this that keeps me up until 1:30 and then drags me out of bed at 0600. If I had to do this for a job I'd be complaining. But no, this is the day I've been voluntarily busting my butt for the last 3 months. .5 in the water/ 18 on the wheels / 5 on the road in Niles, MI out at Barron Lake. I've had my oatmeal and muffin and the coffee's tasting mighty fine. The bag is packed. My kids have made up their "We Support 482" poster and I'm ready (?) to go.
Report coming to ya later today.
Tri'ing to see the finish line,
Neil

What a trip! First triathlon. Made it all the way to the end. But in the interim had to watch multiple women pass me. Wouldn't have been so bad, but several were older than me!! Nonetheless, it was my race to run my way and I was pleased with the results. I finished in the top 20 of my age group (20 out of 20). Finished 233 out of the entire field and I know there was at least one other person finishing behind me.
I set a personal best time was 2:38:18. Of course, since this is my first time, it would be a personal best. The only time I got discouraged was when the truck came by with all the orange pylons picked up from the intersections and passed me. The highlight was passing approximately 20 people as I came in on the bike. The fact that they were finishing the run didn't make any difference to me. I actually passed them!!!
My kids stretched a tape for me to break at the finish line. What a support team. And to add to the humor about 200 feet from the end of the race is Huff Avenue. By that time I had huffed and puffed as far as I wanted to go. Will be back next year.

Were proud of you and your finish. Great race report. There should be a rule about those trucks picking up the race cones, which is downright ugly. Keep your great attitude toward tri's and life and you will be unstoppable.

Still Tri’n

Update. Got the official results from my first tri. I was last at 233 out of 237 triathletes. 4 didn't finish the course. Swim 22:59 for the .5 mile, Bike 1:15:42 for the 17.5 mile on my Raleigh M-45 with knobby tires, and Run 1:02:03 for the 5 mile.
In retrospect, I made one serious mental error during training. I assumed some misguided folks would enter at the last minute with zippo training and finish behind me. I discovered you don't do these things unless you are serious about it. That doesn't mean you can't have fun in the process though. I was pleasantly surprised at the favorable comments from all those who passed me on the bike leg. I'm sure they would have done so on the run too, but by then I was by myself.
Planning on tri'ing again in 2 weeks at a "mini" sprint event.
