Subject: Getting into HR based training. Books, other resources?
I trained for my HIM based almost entirely on RPE backed up by reviewing my HR data after the fact to see if it made sense. Now I'd like to get into more HR based training a bit more seriously.

a) Are there any books/resources you can recommend I get into.

b) The first thing I need to do (I think) is properly determine my zones. What's the best way to do this both with a coach and without?

c) Do HR straps read accurately under water?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Sally Edwards has a good book on HR training.  I started with that one, then continued to read.  There are a lot of resources out there.

The best way I determined my heart zones was through run and bicycle testing.  I used some protocols from Gale Bernhardts book:
 Training Plans for Multisport Athletes

ISBN 978-1931382922
This book is loaded with 14 triathlon and multisport training plans designed for athletes of varying abilities.

My HR strap will read underwater, but it won't stay put so I don't bother with HR while swimming.

You will get more feedback, I am sure on this thread.  Good luck.  I have been training with HR for many years now.  Note that I train "WITH" and not "by".  Don't let HR alone dictate your training sessions.

Look up, I belive the name is "Precision Heart Rate Training" by Joe Friel. Excellent general heart rate training book. It has testing protocols explained. You can do them all yourself, no coach needed. They are not scientific, but more field tests that have done very well for me.

There are some pretty good ('scientific'?) studies showing that the standard field tests (such as those on this site), if properly done, give results very similar to those you'd get from the more 'scientific' measures.

Bottom line:  a field test is fine.
