Subject: Felt B12 seat post bracket

About a year ago someone posted they had a Felt B12 and the seat post bracket broke.  Their LBS told them the part had been recalled and Felt had a replacement that was a better design.  After I read this I went to my LBS and asked them about the bracket.  They had not heard anything but called Felt and asked about it.  Whomever they talked to said there was no recall.  Hmmph.

This morning I'm preping my bike for a ride and notice the seat bracket is broken (see pic below).  Fortunatley I had a spare bracket that I had saved off the B12 that I totaled a year ago.  I'm gonna take this bracket back to my LBS and have them call Felt again about this bracket and see if there is not a heftier design.  BTW, I've not ridden the bike in a long time.  It's been in my shop and likely something bumped into the seat.

I have the same bike and broke mine about 6 months ago.  I took my bike into the LBS I use and they replaced it with a new one free of charge.  They did say that it was a known flaw in some of the batches and that Felt was replacing them for free.  Not technically a recall,  but basically the same thing.  They also gave me an extra one just in case the replacement one also broke.

I'm also on a B12 and I'm on my 3rd bracket. The first one broke during the initial fitting there at the bike shop the day I bought it and the 2nd one broke after about one month of riding it, just as I was leaving my driveway. I went to my LBS and they said that Felt knew it was a problem and sent them a bunch of replacements. So I've got the 3rd one on there and I have a spare that I took with me to IMWI last year because I was not going to tempt fate.

Basically, not a recall but they know it is a problem.

Good info.  Thanks guys.  Now I'll have some good cases to site with my LBS!

The other thing my LBS said that Felt told them was that you had to tighen it to the percise measurement.  If you over tighten even a little bit it will cause it to snap.  I believe it is 5-7 nM.

Geesh Matt, can you put that in in-lbs or ft-lbs?!  What is that Newton-meters?  I torqed it 'snug' +/- 10 in-lbs.  :-)

OK, found an on-line conversion.  That's about 44 - 62 in-lbs.  Geesh, life is so much simplier now than when I was in school and had to convert that using conversion factors!

Quick update...

I took the broken bracket into my bike shop and they took one look at it and got a bag of replacement brackets off the shelf.  I asked if they were replacing the same part or had the design been changed and he said the old bracket is aluminum and the new one is steel.  He said this bracket is used on the Felt's B-series bike as well as some road bikes.  I noticed it was on the S22 also.

The replacement bracket is bare metal and the old bracket was black...so I'll probably take a Sharpie and color it balck.  Matt, I see where you got the 5 - 7 N-M from, it's printed right on the bracket.
